ParticipantTwice, I have encountered fridge freezers, containing these discs. They are about the size of a pound coin with aluminiumized faces and no visible markings on them. They have metal fingers pressing on each side to make contact.
The current fridge/freezer motor starts, the disc gets hot and the thermal fuse, adjacent to the disc, then trips out after a few seconds. It would seem logical to assume that the motor is drawing too much current and that this disc is part of a protection circuit. This is a Servis fridge/freezer, about 4 years old, which obviously I do not wish to make unsafe.
However, some years ago, I had a Proline fridge/freezer which had a similar problem except the disc was open circuit. At the time, I could not obtain a replacement or any information about it so I replaced it with a solid Aluminium disc as an emergency fix since the unit was in an area where the fire risk was not a concern. It continued to run without problems for several months before the unit was eventually scrapped.
Can someone please suggest what these discs are called and if they all have the same rating and where they can be obtained from?

Hi
You need to replace the whole unit that the disc is in , disc not avaliable as a seperate item.It is a solid state relay, when it gets hot its electrical properties change. Do not run compressor with out it. It works as a relay for the start windings of the motor. If surfaces of disc are burnt this will cause compressor to fail to start and trip on the overload device .

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply. The disc looks as new, no sign of overheating etc. The compressor runs initially then stops with a click, as presumably, the adjacent bimetal contact trips. Is this likely to be a motor main winding problem or could a faulty thermostst still cause these symptoms? I am happy to change the thermostat but do not wish ‘to throw good money after bad’ if the whole unit has to be replaced at the end of the day.
Thanks for your help. Regards John

Hi
If compressor is not starting and disc looks ok then most likely compressor is at fault. Thermostat is either on or off,it has no in between action. So looks as if compressor needs replacing, expensive job.

You dont know what it is your lookin at, youve no idea how it works but you feel competent to take it apart and decide what is what. I hope the gas fire doesnt pack in next week or the whole street will know about it.
My advice would be for the sake of £40 – £50 get an honest opinion go by recommendation, its worth its weight in gold and could save you a lot more in the long run. 😳March 18, 2007 at 11:47 pm #207946JMB
ParticipantThere is no point in being rude ‘burns’. I am quite competent to do most repairs (including fitting gas and oil central heating in the past before Corgi/Oftek registration was necessary!!). This disc is a component that I had not had experience of, hence the question. I am fully aware of the function of negative temperature coefficient resistors (NTC’s). I just was’nt certain that this disc was one of them.

Unneccessary, Burns – Washman’s advice was sufficient. If you have nothing positive to contribute, please don’t.
