I find a standard half inch drive socket handle is long enough for most washing machine spannering but you need extra leverage for older Hotpoints when removing the pulley locknut. I usually use a tatty old bit of pipe over the normal handle but today I picked up a telescopic car wheel wrench in Lidl. This should be ideal for the Hotpoints and was £1.99 including a double ended socket 😀

My ‘special tool’ for that job cost me nothing at all, over 35 years ago, still in perfect order. It is a stonking big 24mm/30mm ring spanner supplied to me when I worked for Hotpoint. I no longer have the wooden wedge that was also supplied to ‘lock’ the pulley though.
I use a proper socket which at the time of purchase was to fit my old Kawasaki Z1000s gearbox sprocket nut, just turned out it fitted the Hotpoint spindle nut aswell, result 😀 .
Chris..
