    I have a Zanussi frost free fridge freezer ZX 56/4W. It’s about five years old and over the last few days has started emanating a bad smell. I thought it was something spilled down the side or back which had started to go off, but have now cleaned it all and the smell has returned. It’s not an electrical smell but seems to be coming from the back and is worse when the appliance is boosting. Could something be escaping? Any ideas?

    I shall go and have another hunt for bad food etc. I’m relieved to read that there are “no components, mechanical or gaseous in a fridge that smell as a general rule”. Thanks.

    I have discovered that the smell is coming from the drain pan above the condenser. It seemed to have rancid stuff in it! I have cleaned it out as best I can but am concerned that there will be more rancid liquid coming through. Is there anything internally I should check? (I have cleaned the interior and the drainage hole in the fridge compartment but can’t see any way I can clean out anything else).
