I have a Whirlpool AWZ 3413 tumble dryer that sometimes won’t power on. I turn the main switch and it’s dead – no lights – nothing. Other times it’s fine. When it’s working the programme always completes but if I turn it off afterwards then on again immediately it quite often fails to come on.
It gives the appearance of a loose connection somewhere but I’ve checked all the connections and they are fine. I’ve taken both PCBs out of the machine and inspected them but there are no obvious breaks, dry joints or anything like that. I’ve tested for mains power reaching the board when the switch is turned and that’s fine so it looks as though one of the PCBs may have a problem.
Does anyone know where the problem is likely to be and if it’s fixable?

The machine is activated by the peg at the top of the door striking a lever on the inside of the machine. This works a switch to activate the programme. Unfortunately, if this is mechanism is faulty, it is an integral part of the computer board. You say that the problem is intermittent, so a good clean out, checking for fluff around the switch and lever mechanism might be a good starting point.
Power off, of course.

I’ve had a look at the switch and cleaned around it and it’s not obviously dodgy. In addition if you open the door while it’s working the light stays on whereas when it’s not working there are no lights at all.
One more piece of information that I’ve discovered. When it’s powered on and the light is flashing, if you turn the power off at the wall then turn it back on again the machine quite often won’t power on.
Given that I’m not touching the machine at all I guess this makes it less likely that it’s a mechanical problem and more likely that it’s an electronic one.
