ParticipantI have a whirpool side by side fridge freezer .The freezer has an ice maker and water dispenser.
The temperature for both freezer and fridge are digitally displayed and are set at -18 c for freezer and 6c for the fridge.
The problem is that intermittently food in the fridge freezes for no apparent reason.I am unable to manually overide the temp control to higher this.I assume that there must be a temporay fault with the sensor?
During the warranty an approved engineer came out and replaced a part (in the top left hand corner of the fridge) but he didnt really seem to know what the fault was.Telling me a fridge is supposed to be cold was not helpful!
It was fine again for a few months but is now freezing everything again.
It is now about 20 months old and out of the one year warranty.
I wondered if you might have come across this problem with whirpool side by sides before and be able to suggest what the problem might be – there is no problem with the freezer, ice maker or water dispenser.
Thanks

KeymasterIt’s likely to be a thermistor or a board fault and TBH I’d advise some pro help on this unless one of the Whirlpool guys can offer any pointers.

theres a motorised flap on the top left hand side of the fridge
trouble is, on the early models, it gets stuck open cos ice forms around it
later ones a had a low energy heater attatched to it to stop that
unplug it, and get a hairdryer, and heat it up and the ice will melt and the motorised baffle(flap) will close, dont manually force it please
they freeze in the fridge because its a blown air system, and the air is blown in from the freezer, and with it being stuck open, the fridge acts as a freezertheres no fix im afraid , just warm it up now and again, cover all your food up as well, that helps reduce condensation, so less chance of ice
trust me, ive seen a few

Given that your machine is 20 months old then your machine has the later electronics fitted to it and will try to sort the problem itself by putting itself into defrost mode when it detects a stuck damper. It will continually cycle between cooling in the freezer and defrost until the motorised damper moves again.
During this period foodstuff in the fridge (particularly the top shelf) will freeze if the damper is stuck on open.
Check the vent by the drawers, if it’s frozen this can also lead to freezing of the damper.
If you pack the top shelf with foodstuff you’ll also get freezing,
I’ve found over the years with my own one that if we leave a decent gap around the motorised damper cover and don’t put any warm or uncovered food on the top shelf I don’t get the freezing of the baffle problem. (Freezing leftovers while they’re still warm/hot will also cause problems).
There is a modification for some models that moves the baffle cover vents to the rear of the top shelf, also requires a modified thermistor cover. This is supposed to cure the freezing problem but I’ve never tried it so can’t confirm that it actually works.
The hairdryer trick will get the damper working on a temporary basis, removing from the machine and drying out properly will do better. I use two and change them over if the problem occurs.BTW, I run mine at -20 and 4.

Thank you for the replies ,gratefully received, I think it might have been a modification that was fitted then ,its a sort of curved piece filled with polystyrene.
I shall ask my other half to take it out to give it a thorough check ,in the meantime the hairdryer has found another use!Thank you again
