ParticipantLast problem fixed, thanks to the helpful advice (no self-modification here, thanks! Not that bright!) – but see following!
Current problem is that whenever we open the ‘fridge door, what sounds like the fan goes off, loudly – sounding like it is winding down. Then, nothing at all. Food seems cooler at bottom of ‘fridge, and slightly warmer at the top. No scientific check, more a sense which may be wrong..
Is this related…I guess it might be…

it will, because its blocked with ice behind the evaporator cover. it just so happens the fan is supposed to stop when the door is open (unless u’ve got some ridiculous 12v transformer with a pc fan taped into the inside with trailing wires) to try and stop the introduction of ‘warm’ air into the unit
thats why the fan winds down when u open upif you dont want to defrost for 48hrs (and some ppl dont, because they lose the freezer food) im sure the nice guys here can supply you with the the modified fan and evaporator cover
or
u could try the defrost thing to start with
then take it from there

Thank you – we will try the defrost option and see what happens from there. I read that the fridge and freezer are cooled separately, so presume we can defrost the fridge on its own.
Thanks again.

I’ll resist rising to the bait Helo.
wadejohn, earlier this year when my problems first started with my auto-defrost, side-by-side Samsung unit it followed a replacement, in June 2006, of the “cool-wall” back panel in the fridge section.
Fitted into the rear of that large panel (approx 1ft square) is a reasonably large electric fan designed to circulate cool air around the fridge.
As helo points out, when the door opens this fan is supposed to stop. However, my warranty replacement in June 2006 was required as the fan was making serious noises when operating. This was caused by ice build-up.
8 months after that warranty replacement the new, slightly modified assembly (I understand the modification was made to help avoid ice build-up) failed completely in so far as the fan only very intermittently operated even with the door trip-switch taped in the “closed” position.
I was advised to defrost as well and complied but this didn’t help as the fan was not obscured by ice on this occasion. I removed the cool-wall assembly completely and I guess part of the modification was to add sticky-backed foam to the assembly as the removal caused some of this to break away. Replacement therefore resulted in air entering the rear of the assembly – this resulted in ice build-up again.
The complete assembly can be supplied for approx. £90. Fitting would be extra on top of that.
Another thread, now locked, on this forum described how I installed an ex-PC fan in place of the Samsung original. This is powered from a 12v d.c. wall-socket transformer and hence, is perfectly safe. The result is very effective. The entire fridge is now cool throughout – at the temp. required on the front panel. Noise, whilst evident, is minimal. There’s also no ice build-up.
I document my fix for information purposes only. Should you elect to try something similar neither I nor this forum can be held responsible for its success or failure.

Hi all
Firstly this is a vey easy quick repair when done correctly and not shall we say bodgit and scarper.
the part you will require is an evaperator cover which if your able to join wires ect to a fan this is like undoing a screw.
once the new evaperator cover is fitted then no more noise, inadequate cooling, temprature variations ect.
youve spent a few hundred pounds on a appliance that will need less than £100 spent on it to get it working correctly again.
would you fit your car engine with a bicycle dynamo if the alternator packed up ?>..no you would spend the £200 and get it fixed right.
the parts can either be purchased from myself or the online shop and the general idea how to do i dont mind giving to the purchaser direct but i will not put dismanteling instructions on open public forum.

I’ve had the replacement evaporator cover/ fan assembly (the modified one) and it didn’t solve the problem, fridge still freezing up in a week or so. Reading other posts it seems to me the next stage should be to replace the sensor and the thermal fuse but they look to be the same part on various spares websites! I’m confused, can anybody help & maybe supply the part(s)? Mine’s a SRS2026CVW.
