The ovens stopped heating but all else is OK and I guess my element has expired. I feel confident in the procedure for changing an oven element. However, whilst the back plate of my free standing slot in only has 4 securing screws, there is another device, possibly a thermostat, preventing me from removing the back plate to expose the elements. The object is circular, about 1.5 inches in diameter and half an inch deep.

    Any suggestions welcome.

When you say backplate, do you mean the backplate at the rear ‘outside’ of the oven, or the back panel inside? The thermostat is a long pencil thin tube with a fine capillary leading out of the oven cavity. Sometimes it is clipped to the inner back panel but I don’t think it is on this model. What you may be describing is the glass cover for the internal bulb. It is a a normal threaded screw fit, just unscrew it and inner back panel will come away.

Element is available from the Shop@

    Thanks for your interest.
    I mean the inner backplate.

I’ve just realised what it is. I think its the oven light. Because its absolutely covered with hardened black crud, it wasn’t obvious.
Do I remove this first or does it come forward when I release the backplate?

I was talking about the cover, not the bulb. 8)
