ParticipantOur Panasonic Microwave cooker NNV682, bought in December 2002, has suddenly stopped working.
Yesterday we cooked some frozen brocolli, then some frozen cauliflower in it usinsg the auto button for frozen vegetables. After cooking, the brocolli went into a dish of Chicken Myers (chicken breasts, Campbells chicken soup, cream, touch of curry, sprinkled with grated cheese, cooked in oven at 200 for 30 minutes, delicious). The cauliflower went into a similar dish that included pasta instead of chicken. The brocolli was cooked all right but the cauliflower was almost raw.
Later in the day I tried to cook a tomato for 2 minutes on medium but the microwave kept switching off after about 15 seconds. I tried it with just some water in a basin but the same thing happened. Also tried the auto vegetable button; same result.
My guess it that the inverter or magnetron has gone so it will not be worth repairing. Probably cheaper to replace it with a new model.
Any advice will be appreciated

Hi, inverter approx £80-90 magnetron £40-50, it may turn out that you require both.Due to high voltage :zap: stored within the microwave you should under no circumstances attempt repairing yourself.

Thanks for your advice. I would never attempt to repair a microwave cooker. When it comes to electrical matters, I follow the advice given by Hilaire Belloc:
Lord Finchley tried to mend the electric light
Himself. It struck him dead and serve him right.
It is the business of the wealthy man
To give employment to the artisan. Not that I’m wealthy, just very cautious about electricity.
Anyway, the problem is now solved. Went to John Lewis and bought a Panasonic Microwave NNE255 for £50. It was quicker and cheaper to buy it at their shop than from their internet site (£59 plus delivery). Also cheaper than any other internet offer.
Our old Panasonic Microwave had a grill which we very rarely used because it was such a fag to get the grill stand out of the cupboard. The new model is smaller so it takes up less space on the worktop. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the old model but it does all we need.
Took the old microwave to our local council tip where they have a special bin for old electrical equipment. Also took the fuse out of the 13amp plug just as a precaution in case someone thinks it might still be usable. My guess is that if they plug it in and find it doesn’t switch on, they probably won’t bother to check the fuse.
