I had a timer back from EMW today (thanks guys!! 😀 ). In the box was an information leaflet that showed the availability of the module for the Hotpoint WF860 and WD860 and the Ariston A1636 type machines. It says these machines are fitted with the ‘Carbonless 3 Phase’ motor. 😯
WTF is that? No more carbon brushes? Just complete motors available at ever more extortionate prices to ensure that more machines are prematurely sent to the scrapper?
Can anyone tell me what a ‘Carbonless 3 Phase’ motor is? Is it ‘as read’? If so, what is the reasoning behind the change?
I hope that this is not going to mean the end of carbon brushes which are a steady source of income for everyone in this trade. 😥
When will these manufacturers realise that a washing machine does not need to be as complex as the flight deck of a 747, especially when complexity is to the detriment of reliability and quality. The knock-on effect will only mean an increasing impact on the enviroment. :bang:
Any information on this is very welcome – I really hope I am worrying for nothing. :rolls:

    Thanks,

    Steve.

A bit OT but I have just re read that thread that Chris linked to. Apropos post #4 from Andy2 , I was always under the impression that the future was “GARLIC BREAD” 😆

Sorry, its late and the glass of Strega after copious red wine is kicking in. 8)

At this rate the future will be “Do you want a side order of Garlic Bread with that, Sir?” 😆
Sorry to be negative, but having another 25 years to retirement, it is something you have to consider; even the possibility that this business may cease to exist. 🙁

Careful while working on those Invertor Boards, some of them have capacitors that store a charge for several minutes & give quite a kick!

shich is why when u buy a new one from hotpoint it comes with a note in to power off and leave to discharge for 15 mins

the so called ‘supersilent’ range have these induction motors

however if you are going to replace the board then you can discharge the capacitor to remove the 5 mins wait

I went to one of these a couple of months ago. It was flashing an error code (cant remember what) and had no motor action.
Anyway it turned out to be an open circ wire in the PCB to motor harness.
I ordered and replaced the harness and away it went (much to my relieve lol)

Just thought it might be of interest that Asko were using three phase motors in their domestic machines ten years ago and the advantages are quieter motors with much smoother response and very reliable but the supply board was an expensive beast if it failed. I can’t see Hotpoint getting the same reliability, whatever next! ❓ ❓
