ParticipantHi Guys
Just as a point of interest..
With the increase of thiner plastic outer tubs suffering from damage from coins etc.. just wondered if anyone has repaired them using fiberglass matting and how sucsessfull the repair has been..
Been to a couple just recently and as soon as I say new outer tub.. job lost.. but a fiberglass patch above water line might have been a posibility to prevent land fill..
Just wondered if anyone has tried this or has any tried and tested method of repairing “holed” or cracked outer tubs other than a complete tub change… or any other comments?
Thanks
Mick

Granvilles or one of the many copies available such as B&Q’s own brand are very good for smallish neat holes, not as successful on long thin cracks around stress points such as the back of drum near to bearing housing.

Yes Greg, it does say ‘long thin cracks’ before you quote Kenneth Williams again. ๐

made plenty of repairs in the past, even bellow the water line. smaller cracks and holes with epoxy resin (araldite),make sure to scratch surrounding area with sharp blade to provide a key.some times i apply silacone(like the stuff used on oven door glass) over the top, looks a little messy but works a treat.

I use Tub Repair Epoxy from Qualtex part No MIS86 and have used this on many plastic outer tubs also on twin tub metal drums with success every time.

Tried fiberglass matting on a HP WD tub inside and outside. Lasted for about a month then started to leak. Tried epoxy puttey with same results.
Got fed up with wasting time so I try to sell them a new one now.May 2, 2007 at 4:42 pm #212352MickGeorge

Thanks for the ideas folks..
Have pached the odd one or two if it has been above the water line with a patch cut from the old type polyplastic containers and stuck on with superglue and sealant but its had to be a flat surface and I havn’t risked it below the water line.. but had one or two on the curved edge lately and was looking for ideas..
The aluminium sheet sounds good and see a use for those old pieces Hotpoint used to put in their twin tub spin bearing asy that used to shim out the imperial pully – ideal… but where do you get your aluminium sheet from M1?
