ParticipantHi,
sorry this is gonna be a bit of a ramble – but bear with me :rolls:
I’ve an 8 year old Hoover WS130-001. I wouldn’t say it’s had a particularly hard life … however over a period of time with washes on low temp it can get a bit whiffy washing on 40 degree washes … so as usual I put it on the hottest temp with ariel tablets. However this didn’t cure the smell completely so I put some bleach in the relevant compartment and carried out the maintenance wash again.
After which I thought bingo … off we go. I put a load in as usual and left it to run. When I unloaded the clothes I thought they were unusually damp.
I put the machine on a spin cycle, what happens is that the drum seems to spin at probably the slow spin speed for about two seconds, then stops for about two seconds – this repeats three times, after which it doesn’t spin again at all for the remainder of the cycle. I’ve tried all the other programs (including drying) with the same result.
… I’m assuming the problem is just coincidence …
If the machine is power cycled, the burst of three spins then nothing is repeated.
I’ve had the motor out – plenty of life in the brushes, the tacho generator coil read about 150 ohm resistance. If the motor is spun by hand, an AC voltage is generated and seen on a multimeter, proportional to spin speed – so I guess that part is working … Checked the tacho generator connections on the wiring loom – no problems there.
Removed the programmer / speed controller – there’s a 5.6k ohm resistor, the connections to which looked a bit suspect – so I remade them – other than that no obvious problems on the circuit board.
I reconnected it all again – same result. Measuring the tacho generator output at the input to the controller shows a peak of about 8 or 9VAC, so that further confirms that seems to be OK (unless the voltage should be higher?)
So … I’m leaning towards the combined programmer/controller … any other ideas? How much is a replacement?
Thanks 😉

Have you checked whether or not the armature is down to earth? Will give exactly those symptoms. Failing that, yes, control unit at fault.

Participantfirst thing id try is turning the thermostat down to zero
then see if it spins
if it does, heaters faulty
hope this helps

helo_75 … I’ve tried that … same result – there again I’d expect it as it does the same thing if you switch it off and on again part-way through the cycle (even on rinse or drying) – but thanks for the suggestion.
Penguin45 – pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by the armature being “down to earth”? thanks 8)

Using your test meter, hold one contact to the motor casing, use the other to work your way across the motor terminal block. All readings should be infinite. If you get a reading to the casing, it’ll spin like stink when power is applied and the motor will have to be replaced.

checked … open circuit between case and all terminals on motor – so it looks like the timer/controller then !!
I’ll source & fit a replacement and report back with the results … thanks for the help 🙂

OK … so I rang round on Saturday to order a replacement programmer … one local company (squadmatic) said that they could get hold of one, but asked why I wanted one.
After explaining the fault, they thought it was the tacho generator coil – and said they could come out and have a look. After swapping the tacho generator coil with it making no difference, the programmer was removed and a replacement, refurbished one ordered. It was fitted tonight (Wednesday) and fixed the fault. Cost £95 all in – with a 6 month guarantee on the replacement programmer. Plus as it was done in the evening it meant I didn’t even have to take time off work 8)
So the fault’s fixed for less than I could buy a replacement programmer for 😀
