ParticipantApologies for the incomplete information but getting a list of symptoms from my aged mother over the telephone is not easy.
She has had the washer/dryer from new (6years?) and thinks she only used the dryer in the first few weeks of ownership. When she wanted to use it today the drum rotated, there was a sound of running water (the condenser?) but after 1hr the washing was wet and cold.
I’ve established that she is operating it correctly and can initiate timed “dryings” on both synthetic and cotton settings (and cancel and reset the machine!) . The display and the led’s all look normal and there is no known wash/spin problems and she believes the filter is clear.
Whilst I’m happy repairing my own appliances on a diagnose and leave in bits day 1 and get spares and reassemble day 2 I face the problem of a) the distance and b) I can’t leave the machine in bits.Does the above suggest a common fault (these symptoms were reported in a 2004 post but the initial poster never responded to request for additional info) ? Any diagnostic tests? etc.

Can she hear the “whoosh” of the fan running? If it hasn’t been used for years, the fan assembly may well be seized.

Until tomorrow all I can say is I got “no” in reply to “any other noises?”.
I must say your question fits the circumstances very well. An initial visit with mulimeter the best option?
I should have said that my mother has no confidence in domestic appliance engineers – too much watching of these ripping the customer off TV documentaries combined with replacing her 30 month old fridge freezer as “not worth repairing” and without knowing this I then say “had a lucky escape with our Bosch fridge freezer last week it just needed a new thermostat”May 22, 2007 at 11:31 pm #214655Penguin45

Take your meter with you by all means. First though, pop the top off and make sure the fan and motor are free to rotate. Power off, of course.
It is unfortunate that, like any trade, there are a few idiots who get the rest of us a bad name.
If you can’t solve the problem, use the repairs@ link to find a UKW approved engineer in your area. We have all signed a Charter regulating our performance and business dealings, so you would have some reassurance and comeback if required.
Best of luck,

A spot on diagnosis by Penguin45. 2 screws to remove the top. Fan motor staring me in the face. Seized – quick turn of the pulley and its free.
Thanks
