I have an AEG Competence D5701-4 Oven (serial number 51300064).
It stopped working a couple of days ago when my wife turned it up to about 240 degrees C. I thought it was the element, so I bought one and was about to replace it when I noticed that on one of the connecting wires (on the negative side) just a few mm from the spade connector, the insulation had failed and the conductor was visible.
I decided to open up the back of the oven and check the condition of the rest of the wiring and saw that many other wires in that vacinity were badly scorched and a couple were completely burned out, being held together by what was left of the insulation.
The two wires that failed were in the close proximity to a capacitor which I believe is a filter/suppressor (part no KPB7312).
After having a look around I have a feeling that the scorching seems to be from the heat of the oven escaping through the hole through which one of the element cable passes, but I’m not sure.
There is some webbing type material that has been put around the wires in this area which I assume is there to help protect the wires from the heat (I guess it wasn’t in the right place).
I have tested the resistance across the old element and it gives me a reading of 22 ohms. This reading is the same as that of the new element.
I would like to fix the oven myself as money is a bit tight at the moment, but I’m trying to find out if anybody has seen anything like this before and could indicate a possible cause.
Ulimately I will probably have to replace the capacitor and a couple of the spade connectors, so I wonder if you can also help me locate those parts.
By the way, the top oven is working perfectly and I’m fairly sure everything on the bottom oven was working properly as well before it failed. The light and grill on the bottom oven still work.
On power up, the number 273 is briefly displayed just before the time of 12:00 is displayed. Is this an error code of some sort ??

That is a mains interference suppressor, by the terminal block. It doesn’t appear to be on the parts listing, so an email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk to identify the replacement. Odd that the wiring appears to have chafed in a static installation. The scorch marks will be grease escaping and is fairly typical.
From the front, on the l/h side of the main oven box, there is a single shot thermal cut-out which may have tripped. Question then would be why?
The 273 on the timer I can’t help you with……

273 on the time is the software for that model i know this as i repair this group of products every day.

Thanks for all your help guys.
I have now replaced the mains suppressor, the main oven element and the dodgy spade connector and everything is now working OK.
Still not sure why it failed in the first place, but I guess that’s life.
