Hi hope someone can help and apologies if this is in the wrong area [please let me know so I can change]. Anyway my Hoover washing machine has just started to make a clicking sound when the drum is turned. I noticed first when the machine went to spin and a louder than normal sound was heard through the house. The machine still works i.e water is drained away on the spin cycle etc but I don’t want to risk further damage by continuing to use without further investigation.

Would I, a not too confident DIYer possibly be able to invesigate before calling out an engineer?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers
    Greg

Hi gregatron firstly can you tell if its a motor or drum bearing noise? if you put your hand on the inside of the drum and gently move the drum back and fourth it should feel smooth if on it could be the bearings if you cant tell if its coming from the bearings or motor then you can try removing the drive belt and then revolving the drum if all smooth and quiet then get hold of the motor shaft and spin that as it could be a raised or damaged armiture(where the brushes touch) please make sure that the plug is removed from the power supply before you remove any panels/lid

Hi Ritch, thank you for the quick response. When you say back and forth do you mean from side to side i.e as if it was turning round? or rock it from the bsck of machine to the front? Sorry for silly question…its I just have moved the drum round and I can hear a clicking sound? Is this good or bad?

OK Thanks. So I have turned the drum and it does click also when I first went to the machine when the problem arose there was an ‘elecrical burning’ smell…this doesn’t sound good does it?

Hi gregatron if the drum feels smooth but there is a clicking noise that may sound like its coming from the motor and there is a burning smell then i would say its time for a new motor very easy diy job and you can get the part from the spare parts side on this site but just to check you need to remove the drive belt at the rear and spin the motor by hand then you should hear the same clicking noise if so its the motor also when you have the belt off just spin the drum and make sure its smooth and silient as if not your drum bearings may have also gone and this is not a diy job also very worth while removing the motor and checking that the brushes are ok but it sounds like a raised segment on the armeture of the motor remember plug out first!

Pull plug first if you intend to make the above checks yourself………

Thanks everyone for your quick and helpful responses. Looks like I’m going to have a Monday night of checking the back of my washing machine…just out of interest would anyone know a estimate of how much the spare part might be?
