ParticipantI have just had installed a new fridge freezer which every so often makes a cracking sound as though ice is breaking. The supplier says that this is normal but I am not sure I believe them. Can someone confirm that this sound is the norm.

Hi Chris,
Yes this is a problem, we used to get it on the Candy fridge freezers and a few others. Basically it’s expansion/contraction and all too often there’s not much that can be done about it.
There was a mod on one or two whereby you inject oil to negate the effect but I don’t know of any such cure on a Hygena machine.

When you say it is a problem do you think I have grounds to return the item as not fit for purpose? It is installed in a small flat with an open plan kitchen and makes you jump out of your skin when it happens

Well, that’s a hard one…
You see, the machine is actually doing the job it was supposed to do, i.e. keep food cool or frozen, the fact that it makes an occasional noise that’s a whole other debate. TBH it comes down to how reasonable the retailer is and obviously you are. If it’s a known issue then there’s all too likely to be a cure for it and, even if not, a replacement may well produce the same result.
If you’ve only just purchased it, as in within the past few days, then the retailer should oblige an exchange in any event. If it’s a few weeks old (whether you’ve used it or not I hasten to add) then the onus is on you to prove that it’s unfit for purpose. But then how do you prove it’s unfit when it does what it’s supposed to do?
See what I mean about it being a tough one? 😉
First off I’d talk to the retailer in a reasonable way and try to see what can be done by way of a fix or exchange and take it from there. Most decent retailers, including MFI and Howdens if it was bought there, will do their best to sort it out for you.
