I have been called to a washing machine that failed a pat test.
How do you test a washing machine with a pat tester if you cant test the heater ect as there would be no power sent to it?
I have put a number of new appliances on to my master pat 5000
on class1 normal earth 0.1 25 amps and they all fail the test unless i press the 10ma red button!a local sparky will not past this machine.
as far as i was aware a pat tester is for portable appliances and a washing machine is not that!so how do you test a washing machine???

Some of the “old boys” might advise you to use a megger to test insulation and continuity before plugging it in then again in the heat up position, which may have to be done from the pressure switch or directly on the heater as some machines use an independent relay to supply the heater 😉
If it’s hard wired to the house then you have got to do the tests from the machines terminal block and heater as above after making sure that has been fully isolated from the supply which may mean that you have to take the flex wires out off the terminal block. Again it is a good idea to ensure by test that LIVE supply is off first, as you cannot trust that the house wiring/fused spur unit is correct polarity.(remember a lot of wiring has been done by non competent kitchen fitters 👿 ) It would also be prudent to make a written comment that the supply flex had not been tested.Insulation should not be less than 2M ohms, good continuity of the earth would be less than 0.5 ohms
