Hi Folks
Went to this today to above m/c as was tripping the ELCB.. tested and found earth fault on heater.. checked heater and no apparent fault and looked ok.. on closer examination of chamber had one or two bits of damp fluff stuck to the side which gave rise to the thought that maybe it was damp mica that was causing the earth due to water saturation..
Checked pump and tubes for blockages and apart from a bit of slime in pump catchment tray all looked ok and when questioned cust said water filling into empty tray ok..
Are these just crap elements or is there something causing this?.. Seem to remember reading somewhere about conensation due to m/c on outside wall somewhere.. although m/c on outside wall can’t see this as problem..
Anyone else had this prob or can shed any proverb light..

Elements getting damp and tripping is very common on these. most of the ones I see have badly gunged up condensor and float chamber. I usually lie down on the floor and reach right into the drain channel at the back of the condensor housing and clear it out, also poke a large bag tie through the drain channel. Swift blast with a hair dryer normally sorts the element. The stupid design of the condensor front makes it very difficult for the user to keep clean. 😥

I had this once and even when the mica was properly dried out the next use the fault reappeared changed the heater all was well (at least I got no call back) must have been the mica was opened up between the layers and perminantly broken down

Not the most inspiring element, the one in my hairdyrer is more substantial. 😥

Had this fault. earth fault on heater. nothing visible. Changing heater and cleaning pump chamber cleard fault. The channel where water flows into pump chamber is hard to spot. Viewed from rear of machine it is at the bottom left of the chamber.

Thanks for the replies folks.. Looks like a more detailed inspection of condenser chamber required..
I don’t have much call for a hairdrier these days… suppose I will have to borrow the customers… you blokes are so vain these days 😯

Been back and there was a fair bit of gunge in the hidden channel at the back of the condenser chamber.. can’t believe the drain of hole is so small to drain off the back of the chamber (must be specially designed to block after 12 months :rolls: ).. although it can’t have been blocked completely I’m supprised it wasn’t considering the size of it and the amount of gunge that had collected were the eye can’t see..

hotpoint have modified the heater assembly/ to reduce condensation therefore reducing the tracking to earth. there is no mention of this to trade but any assembly u get now is the new modified one! use C00194155, dont even bother with old 1703647 part number!
ps, make sure u wipe that white powdery crap off the back plate before reassembly, it conducts when damp!cheers
