    Hi All,

Having been really pleased with my ff for the last 10 years now, in the last week or so, the freezer has been alarming overnight when it reaches -13.

We cancel the alarm and pop the superfreeze (bad idea?) on to try to get it back to -18. Sometimes it will just manage it, other times it’s stubborn and manages -14 and stays there.

Having searched through this site, I’m planning a 24hr poweroff, and a pipe check at the back – I also have suffered with solid ice under the bottom freezer bin, which seems to come from over the back of the plastic behind said bin – there are two lines of ice running down to form the pool.

If I still have the problem after the powerdown, I would appreciate some pointers for any other actions I could try.

Obviously, if I need an engineer visit, then that’s what I’ll do.

Many thanks in advance for all any any help.

    Hi
I think you will find if you give it the 24hr off time and follow the following, that the fault may not re-occur. – Put towels on freezer floor and floor and remove the rear of the inner freezer rear to gain access to the evaporator. Locate the drain channel hole (centre of drain trough) and proceed to “rod” gently with something suitable whilst observing the rear exit of said drain above compressor bath, making sure all if any foreign debris is removed
Leave the power off to appliance whilst undertaking this task 😉

    Thanks for the additional info.

Not wishing to totally scr£w things up, am I to assume that removing the rear on the inner back of the freezer part is simple to do?

    Thanks once more,

    Hi
All drawers out, back sort of locks in on a few nibs. They are a pain and you may break a few, can’t be helped, just take your time.

you may find blue flecks blocking the drain hole – these are paint flakes off the evaporator pipes – just remove as many of these from the drain hole as you can….if present

    Hi All,

Thought I’d report back on my findings….

After palming off all my frozens on my Mum & Dad, I removed the inside rear cover (d@mn fiddly snappy bits ) and sure enough, the evaporator was well frozen up, along with the drain hole.

After 21hrs defrost, I cleaned up all the water, dried it out, piped out and checked the drain hole and powered back on.

Temp at reboot 🙂 was +23 freezer and +22 fridge. After 5.5 hrs, the freezer was -18 and the fridge just behind at +8, finally reaching +2 a couple of hours later on.

Loaded back up a further 12 hours later and for a while it held ok at -18, but a little boost with superfreeze was needed for a while.

Seems to have nailed it ❗ ❗ ❗

Many thanks to all for their help in this, and other matters – it is most appreciated ❗ ❗ 😀 😀

fwiw, my 10 yr old KGU3201GB appears to exhibit similar symptoms during normal use during the day and after putting any new food into the fridge or freezer lately with the alarm often going off. It does return to -18 degC if left overnight though.

I was thinking about buying a new fridge/freezer until I came across this useful thread. There’s no visible frost in the freezer compartment/drawers, but I can see some frost build up through the fan hole, and there is a crunching noise (like from frost) when I prod the rear panel at the back of the freezer compartment.

I’m guessing it needs a thorough thawing out.

I’ve just this morning removed the inner panel from the rear of the freezer compartment.

There was some melted ice along the top of the evaporator? beneath the fan. It was easy to remove.

There was a large chunk of melted ice around a coil of thin copper tubing (about 1-2mm thick). At first I thought it was a thermocouple of some sort, but then noticed there were no electrical wires to it, and the ends of the tubing appear to be plumbed into the same pipe feeding the evaporator(?) pipework beneath it.

Can anyone tell me the purpose of this thin coil of copper tubing?

(Using a mirror, there was little ice in the evaporator? assembly. Just some small round blobs of ice visible)
