ParticipantI have a hotpoint wm31 and cannot get locknut off the back which
is connected to the pulley.I cant wedge it and thus rotates when locknut is turned . The pulley spokes may break if excessive force used.
Any help appreciated.

Wedging the pulley and excessive force is the only way……….. I think I’ve broken one in 15 years.

Sadly – by trying to wedge it and using force. I Have broken one of the spokes.
Still cant get locknut off. I am trying to replace the bearings.
Any other suggestions welcome. How about heat using a paint stripper.
Also is the locknut threadlocked?July 5, 2007 at 6:03 pm #219792iadom

You should have used a shaped block of wood to wedge it, the nut is secured with Loctite, once you have broken the loctite seal the nut will spin off quite easily. Applying heat can help but make sure to keep the flame away from the nylon drum.
Jim.
PS. I have broken several of these but that is in well over 30 years 🙂

One swift blow with a hammer on the spanner (always use a ring spanner) does it for me and I, ahem, haven’t managed to break a single pulley 😆

It is not unknown for these pulleys to break under normal use without being touched in any way, the chances are that after 39 years I am likely to come across the odd one that has a weakness, just waiting for me to clout the large, Hotpoint supplied ring spanner. 😀
In fact if only one spoke of the pulley is missing it will quite often work perfectly.

I think that I would be inclined to buy myself a nut splitter for a job like this if I had any doubts about how to wedge the pulley or how to release a threadlocked nut.
Obviously it would mean obtaining a new nut, (and possibly a tube of threadlock), as the nut, once split, is unusable.

You put the handle of the large club hammer you brought with you to do the bearings with into one of the recesses in the tank moulding, bring the pulley round to lock it, then use the 2′ long combi spanner (30?32?mm)I bought years ago to undo the nut. Even my puny 9 1/2 stones can crack the nut off……

At the risk of entering into Evren territory 😀 this is totally uneccessary. I like many others on here have removed thousands of these nuts, never once needing more than a couple of sharp blows to break the loctite.
I have seen one or two members of the public remove the nut then try to use pulley drawers on the pulley :rolls: 😯Jim.

In my youth I had a bike I used every day to go to school and it had a broken spoke. It never was any bother for not having it and the wheel ran true and straight for years. But I don’t think a broken Hotpoint spoke would be so enduring?
And as for ‘nut splitters’? :rolls:
Well then , the ‘Caution Notice’ at the very bottom of this page says it all….. 😆
