Hi Folks
Anyone got any suggestions of an easy way to get these b@*&@!s out.. Always been a struggle but had a couple just recently where I just couldn’t shift them.. tried heating them, broke a couple of professional standered torx bits.. even tried the old hammer and chisle desperation methode to no avail.. so any sugessions gratefully recieved..
Give me the old hex bolts anytime..

Wish I knew ! I’ve snapped loads of the Torx bits trying & still can’t get them out. Do Indesit have a hardened Torx bit that we could buy ?

I,ve used same bit for years and never snapped it, i usualy give the bolt a couple of good whacks with a cold chisel to get it started then they come of easy peasy.

yep, give it a good hit first to break the thredlock, try to tighten just a fraction too b4 unscrewing

same for me, after several torx bits failed i was extreemly wary of offering to change the bearings. then i when to fix a machine and the customer was a mechanical engineer. i explained the problem and he used the hammer and chisel method which worked. i have used it ever since without failure. use the chisel to start a groove, two or three good hits to provide a horizontal groove that you can then get the chisel almost vertical to give the b*****st bolt a start to unscrew….faint heart never won a fair lady!!!!

I usually find that a centre punch works for me when used in the same way as the chisel method described above,. what I woud really like to know is what are the claimed advantage of torx bolts and allen key bolts over the standard hex bolt. Since the size of the bolt head is larger than the orifice gripped by the tool, you are obviously working at a mechanical disadvantage. Message to designers. If it works fine,dont spend money on “improving”it. If it aint f***ed dont fix it.
That one’s easy. Torx are better than Allen, allen better than normal hex. It’s all about the angle that torque is applied at- if the bit is a proper fit, there’s less chance of camming-out and damaging the head. The fastener is retained better on the tool too. Look at the motor trade, wider and wider useage of splined bits- 12 points and more. Very hard fasteners and tools allow massive torques.
If the designer has specified fasteners that are soft as butter, it doesn’t matter which head design is in use, tho.

Wow, Awsome :rolls: Still a bit anoying that you have to use a hammer and chisle to shift something that some pillock has overdosed with threadlock 😥 I am sure he would not waste it if he was paying for the stuff 😆

I personally think the only advantage is that thet thet can fit the bolt into a air tool easier and it saves time on production – eg. cost 😯 .. If it’s that much better than a hex bolt why do they have to fix it with Locktight and make the head so big to improve the friction grip on the pully? Hmm.. maybe they can’t tighten it as well as a hex bolt?
I know that trying to undo the damm things with a torx bit the angle of force is all wrong 😡
But glad its not just me who has a problem with these..

Having broken several tools, I now use a chisel first.
also sometimes blow lampPs if you buy the torx bits from Halfords they have lifetime guarantee.

whack the bolt a few times with a mallet, ensure the there is no movement in the pulley after locking it, remove with an impact T40 bit, works a charm. no fuss
ps. dont weaken your bit by over stressing it when tightening the bolt back up again!

Indesit have a T40 bit which is extra tough and an adaptor for fitting the bits onto a 3/4 ratchet.
An ordinary torx bit will simply break up if trying to shift these bolts.
perhaps one of the indesit engineers will provide the numbers for these two parts.
I purchased them some years ago through Indesit trade spares without any problem, but they werent cheap by any means.

not only do they use locktite but from memory the back of the bolt head is grooved to lock in the alloy pulley
hit it first i say am always wary of slipping on this machine after a torx bit snapped and i ended up with 4 stitches to proove it

Never really had a problem with these – now the countersunk Allen key jobbie on the current ‘Lux group stuff is a nightmare!

The trick is…..to break the seal give the bolt a decent belt with a hammer I find using a torque wrench to undo them means you wont over do the stress.
Halfords professional torx bits and in fact all there pro range tools come with a lifetime guarantee.
At least if you do manage to break one you can just walk back into halfords & get a replacement. If you keep the plastic holder (With halfords profesional printed on it)
they wil normally accept this in place of your receipt 😉
