    Hello,

    The bearings on my Hotpoint need replacing. I have obtained replacement bearings and spider. I have stripped the machine down and removed the pulley from the spider shaft. It should now be a case of knocking the shaft through and removing the inner drum. However I am not sure how hard it is to do this. I have tried to tap the shaft through using a hammer and a block of wood but it hasn’t budged yet. Is this normal and do you have to really smack it hard to get it to come out?

    I’ve then got the joy of getting the outer bearing (the one at the back in the outer drum) to come out.

    Has anyone done this themselves and did they have any problems removing the inner drum? Is it just a case of keeping on hitting it harder and harder?

    if you are fitting a new spider too then yes, hit it hard, (i hope the plug is already out!), if your not changing the spider then put the nut back on b4 you hit it to protect the spider thread, 2-3 hits should be plenty though, ideally the bearings need to be ‘pulled in’ so not really a DIY job unles you’ve got the tools

    For hammer read lump hammer, or small sledge hammer – your domestic claw hammer will not generate enough “umpy” to move it.

    That one is easy, if that one doesn’t come out easily, is badly rusted or damaged then your are in real trouble. The difficult one is the larger inside/front bearing, which is the first one to fail. Quite often it will completely collapse if it has been left for to long making a noise. It it does come out in bits the you have the difficult, sometimes impossible task of removing the outer shell of the bearing from the drum without damaging the drum itself.

    Thank you everyone for your help. I got my big hammer on the spider shaft and got the inner drum out. Then, with the aid of a solid steel bar, used as a punch, I had quite a job getting the bearings out.
    You were quite right that the inner one was very badly corroded the water seal having failed – this broke up as it came out.
    Getting the new bearings in place was one hell of a job. It’s only the fact that I have access to a lathe and was able to make a tool to pull the bearings in that allowed me to do this. You were quite right with your advice that this is not really a DIY job. It took me hours and was really hard. I wouldn’t recommend anyone doing this job without the proper tools or the ability to fabricate them.
    I don’t know if I could have got anyone to do this job. The parts (bearings seal and new spider) cost £40. The labour and callout would have been prohibitive I guess. Especially as the machine is now 21 years old.
    But I think it is quite a good machine and hope it’ll go on now for a little while longer.

    Anyway, it’s all back together now and is very, very much quieter on the spin cycle!

    You may have found many local independents who would have done this job, I do several every month, takes around 30 to 45 minutes with the correct tools, so not to prohibitive when you think that would include a thorough inspection of all the other components and known problem areas before commencing the repair 😉 , the price you paid is about £5.00 over the actual list price so not to bad, if that included delivery. You should really have changed the large black drum front seal, refitting the old one often leads to leaks, part number if you find you need it is 168172.
