    Hi there,

I’ve had this machine for around 3 years after I bought it second hand from a shop. In November last year the machine starting getting so unbearably noisy that it scared me. I called out an engineer and he told me that it would cost £96 to fix it, so I got it fixed. I seem to have the same problem again, its almost like the drum is loose, it seems to have too much movement front to back, the sound is like a metallic scrapeing accompanied by the most unbelieveable banging noises.

I found the receipt from the engineer that came last time and if I read his writing properly it says “Fitted new beading (or bearing – can’t read it) assembly, gasket and tub spider.” So I have phoned him again, he will come tomorrow afternoon to check it over for me.

Thing is, I can’t really afford a new washing machine right now, so if its only going to cost about £50 to fix it I would rather do that, but what I am worried about is the information I have found out about these washing machines. I have learned that if the bearings go it can cost up to £100 to fix.

Should the bearings have gone in such a short space of time, if indeed it was the bearings that were replaced before, is there such thing as a beading assembly? Sorry for the questions, but I would like to be armed with as much information as possible before the engineer comes. Don’t get me wrong, he seems like a nice enough chap, but ya just never know if someone is trying to pull one over on you.

price about right for bearings and shaft
they are rubbish so every chance the bearings have gone again
very unlucky if the shaft is damaged again
    most likely just bearings
so should be a bit cheaper than last time

Okay, the engineer came around this afternoon, he immediately said that he could tell just by a quick once over that the bearings or the mountings had gone again. He seemed a little baffled that he just replaced them in November and now we seem to have the same problem. He said he would have to order the replacement part in.

Would he be responsible for the part as it appears to be faulty, or will I have to pay him again for refitting a new part?

    Any help would be appreciated.
