ParticipantThe temperature in the freezer section of our fridge-freezer goes up to an indicated -9 or so and the front of the casing, especially the bit between the fridge and freezer compartments, gets very hot. The problem is intermittent and sometimes fixes itself; other times we have cured it by turning on the fast freeze, and on occasions have just chickened out and turned the whole thing off! The fridge doesn’t seem to be affected (apart from the casing heating up). Any clues as to what might be causing this?

Hi,
The heat is the anti-condensate line I expect and it will get hot. Basically it’s there to evaporate any condensation at the door seals.
It sounds as if the compressor may be cutting out on overheat though, is it well vented?

Hi there, thanks for the response. It’s in a corner with the left-hand side and the back against adjacent walls – presumably it’s designed for this kind of situation, and not to sit in the middle of the kitchen floor! It seems to misbehave more when the weather’s warm, so ambient temperature seems to affect it. Is it a thermostat problem, do you think? Or – I read somewhere that the compressors in this model of f/freezer were very unreliable – should we perhaps be looking at replacing the compressor? I don’t know if this is do-able or not so forgive me if I’m talking rubbish – my other half is the handyman.

Hi A,
Sounds far more like a compressor problem and that’s not a DIY job at all.

Could be intermittent problem with the condenser fan motor.
If that fails you get temperatures and heat at the places you say.July 31, 2007 at 7:28 pm #222238clivejameson

Have you checked the condenser is clean? (pull off lower kick panel and hoover out)
