ParticipantI read with great interest Penguin45’s article about E2 error codes for Smeg dishwashers:
http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … ge&pid=102
Unfortunately, my dishwasher is suffering this too…
I removed the side panel and cleared out the fill chambers as best as I could. Still a bit mucky but I would think should be okay – but still getting an E2.
There are two “devices” plugged into the fill chambers. One is the pressure switch talked about in the article and the other thing which fits in the lower corner and just seems to vibrate a lot. Another sensor???
By blowing into the pressure sensor device and covering the end with blue tack the machine seemed to get past the E2 but continued to try and drain and drain eventually saying E1. Throughout this time, the device at the bottom left just vibrated a lot.
Could you advise on what you feel maybe the problem?
In summary, pressure sensor probably isn’t getting enough pressure to prevent the “flood” error E2 – so perhaps broken switch or fill chamber needs replacing I assume? And then there’s this other device I’m not sure the purpose of.
If left for a few days, we can get a load done but then we’re back to E2. So presumably PCB is okay?
Your comments and advice much appreciated.
Regards, Scot

Which infamous SMEG have you got? There are quite a few variations, each with its own quirks. That which vibrates may well be the drain pump being run by the flood protection system.

Hi Penguin, STX 1.2 is the model in question. ~Scot

Both codes relate to flood protection issues. You definitely have a blockage somewhere. You mention that you have had a go at cleaning the matrix – if you can still see black sludge in the lower parts you still have a problem. Additionally, you have to clean out the tube from the back of the sump to the matrix.
If none of this works you’ll have to get a new matrix.
Please don’t live test, BTW – very dangerous……

Okay, thanks Penguin. I shall get some bendy aparatus and scub the heck out of that matrix to make sure there is no blockage whatsoever. I shall take the same punitive meaures against the sump and pipe as well. Somewhere I hope to find the bit of gunk that is causing a marriage breakdown.
But…
How many flood sensors are involved here? I think I recognised one under the machine which I’ve made sure is not in effect. Then there is the one connected to the matrix – that too I took care of with a bit of blue tack.
So, basically, there’s the dishwasher, with no matrix attached, the pressure sensor with “pressure” and the flood pump, well, pumping because it thinks there is a flood.
But why? Surely, if the pressure switch is happy, the machine should be filling with water or is there yet another sensor lurking somewhere…
Thanks for your consideration.

The one on the matrix is the pressure or level switch. The gadget on the floor of the appliance is the flood protection device. It has a float switch underneath in case the base floods and a diaphragm switch in the top in case the water level system blocks. Air is diverted by the weight of water initially to the level switch – if it carries on filling, it trips the float sensor.

Just to drag this subject up again – i always have problems with these leaking from one or more of the ‘o’ seal joints at the bottom when refitting. I hate removing these for cleaning for this reason. Has anyone a solution for this problem?

Hi Andy2
Just noticed your question while I was doing some homework to understand my dishwasher system.
I dismantled parts of my dishwasher this evening, including the IWMS, and managed to drain a lot of water. Warning bells rang for me when I saw an o ring with plumber’s tape around it and knew there could be a potential problem later. My solution was to use a length of hosing to syphon the fluid out, thereby taking away the need for me to break the seal in the first place. If I had to I would have had to use plumber’s tape.
This was my way round, but that said, maybe you knew all this anyway (I am new to dishwasher systems!)…
