What is with the new built in hobs and ovens, the terminal blocks are getting smaller, you can just get 6mm, 10mm got no chance.
Today had to fit in a Hotpoint hob instructions state 4mm cable, where do you get it from, most electrical wholesalers dont sell it.
Why they dont supply it already connected.Has anybody else found this a problem, and is there a better way, I have seen some crimp eyelets and wondered if this would be suitable ?

Steven, I replace quite a few hobs and have had the same problem as yourself. The last one I replaced had an existing 6mm heat resistant cable fitted which was a lot easier to fit to the new hob as it was multi stranded. For the next one I am going to try to source some 6mm butyl cable as it would make life a whole lot easier. I was lurking on the screwfix sparks site when this was discussed and some posters stated that hobs should be wired in 10m, I had to post back to tell them NO CHANCE I will let you know if I can find the flex cable.

We got it from CPC for installation work as it’s about all you can use these days and, anyway, heat resistant flex is what should be used if there’s an oven beneath the hob. Yes, I have seen 6mm T&E burnt through. 😉
It’s easier to route the cable using that stuff as well, but it isn’t cheap from memory.
I think we used 2.5 for ovens (unless pyro or summat daft) and 6mm for the hobs. I can’t see the need for 10mm cable.

Thanks for that Ken, I dread to think what CPC would charge for a 50m drum !. I will see if my local lecy wholesaler will get some in for me and supply in lengths.

some manufacturers recomend and I have seen used 2.5 heat resisting B&Q sell it in short lenghts listed as “for electric hobs” easy to fit it you dont mind it glowing in the dark!!!!!!

Average load of hobs is 6kw thats presuming theres 2X 1800w & 2X 1200w plates, i know some have 1500 watt elements.
A 6kw load would be take say- 27-28Aamp.
Thats quesswork, not using any tables here, i know that 2.5mm T&E cable is capable of carrying 32A & 4mm is therfore OK for a hob installation.
Most hobs have a short cable (a metre or so). The overheating problen arises from one problem mostly & you’ll find this whether the appliance is wired in 2.5mm or 25mm :- if the connections are not tightened then overheating occurs at the point of bad connection!
