ParticipantHello,
I have the above machine, built in 1996. A few months ago it would stop in the wash cycle, doing nothing – although the jetsystem pump kept working. After about 20 mins of inactivity I moved the timer on manually a notch, and the machine continued its work to completion.
I checked the filter – all clean as predicted (I clean it regularly). The machine pumps out OK.
Everything was OK for a few months until last night when it started stopping again – although this time much further on in the cycle. It had in fact almost completed the full cycle. I could hear the timer clicking but not moving on.
I suspect the timer is broken although having read the articles on this site I am reluctant to jump to this conclusion.
Do you think it’s the timer? What might it cost me to fix? I am competent at machines (I restore Land Rovers so know one end of a screwdriver from another)
Or as the machine is 11 years old, is it time to scrap it?
Thanks
Xileno

Probably not, its more likely the water level sensor is crudded up (the manifold unit behind the drain filter wants stripping and cleaning) 😉
Also the motor brushes are likely to be well worn by now, oh! and the heater needs checking with a meter to see if its OK?

Thanks for the reply. I am sure the heater and motor are OK, you can feel the water temperature by touching the glass door and the motor is as silent as when new.
I could definitely hear a clicking sound coming from the round dial on the front which leads me to think it’s this which is the problem. However I will see if I can access the water level sensor and give it a clean.
Thanks again

The clicking sound you hear is probably the ‘sub-interval cam’ which is the secondary reverse tumbling switching mechanism within the timer and quite normal. It would be our usual practice (in the trade) to check all working components on the machine thoroughly first to eliminate the possible reasons the timer is just sat there, clicking and waiting for another component to do its job before moving on. 😉
Bit like a Land Rover engine ticking away waiting for someone to drop the clutch and then, and only then, away it goes……! 8)

Don’t worry about ’11 years old’ with this Zanussi. This is a first class machine and much better quality than you could buy today under £400!!
If the timer has failed, it is still seriously worth considering fixing it – as long as everything else is in good order. 🙂
The clean out of the air chamber controlling the water level pressure switch is fiddly. It is best (and more thorough) to remove it from the machine.
IMHO it would be prudent to get an engineer to check it over first and as Martin said, it could well be something small and inexpensive. The timer units are usually very reliable.

Thanks for the reply. The problem I have is the fault is intermittent, the last two washes it has worked perfectly. I will certainly consider repairing it, I hate to throw old things away particularly if they’re better quality than the new ones.

Intermittent fault would suggest that it is definitely blocked – the blockage can ‘shift’ and allow the machine to work now and again. Be careful though – pressure switch blockages can lead to flooded kitchens in many cases.
Get it sorted as soon as possible. 😉Steve.

Oh dear. Man came out to look at it yesterday, definitely the timer gone he says. £92 + £30 fitting 🙁
Not sure whether it’s worth it on a 12 year old machine. Maybe another one hits the landfill 🙁
Should I repair it or buy another? Thinking of the ISE 5 😀
Problem is if I repair it this year, then next year there maybe something else. Machine is probably near its end if life. !2 years isn’t bad.
Any ideas where I could get a cheap timer?
Thanks
