ParticipantHad a call from my bank this morning…”have you been to Canada? …you are overdrawn and that never happens to you”
Seems I used my debit card for fuel in a petrol station on the coast and the buggers cloned it and withdrew £2700 in Canada. Luckily the bank picked it up and will reimburse me but several in my village were caught the same and were “in” Philipines and France. 😕
Just shows what a theiving lot there are and in future will just use my Tesco fuel account ‘cos they can’t get to that. Hate Tesco but this is useful to me.
I will also check bank statements in future.

The wife had mobile phone purchase and two top ups on her Tesco card last month, which we no nothing about 😕 . Tesco have credited the card and changed details. 🙂
Can’t understand how they cannot trace the owner of the new phone though 😕August 15, 2007 at 10:05 am #223632VillageIdiot2

Somebody used my card in Finland a few weeks back….. 😯
As I were paying for items in Halfords, my card declined, then the machine instructed her to call the bank.. Bank lady told me they had put a temporary stop on my card as it was used in Finland @ 10.06 and in the UK (by me) @ 12.45 on the same day which had alerted the bank…… NICE ONE  , I now have a new card and I’m abit more fussy on where i use it!August 15, 2007 at 11:05 am #223633EFS

Had a call from my bank to ask if I had used my debit card to make an online donation of £1.05 to the Red Cross as this was not normal activity on my account (they obviously know me better than I thought).
Needless to say my card had been cloned and this was a test transaction before they emptied the account.
So hats off to Alliance & Leicester for being vigilant.Steve.

What is frightening is the number of cases amongst a small number of people reading this thread.
I also got the call from the bank 18 months ago, asking if I had just wagered $500 on a US, g a m b li n g site. :rolls:
They had also tried a small trial transaction beforehand. No money was lost and a new card arrived ASAP.
My card could not have been skimmed because I leave it locked up at home unless I am certain I am going to use it and hadn’t used it outside for over six months.
My daughter wasn’t as lucky, hers was skimmed in a Manchester restaurant and used in Scotland to buy a mobile phone and several other items, her bank the Halifax never spotted it, she noticed it whilst checking her account on-line. It took her months to get the money back.

skimming…has anyone , including the banks and other financial providers got any ideas or suggestions as to how to minimise this theft. from the above cases it doesn’t seem to matter haw vigilant you are some piece of s@@t will try to rob you of your hard and legally earned cash. i’ve read all the stuff about keeping your card secure and be vigilant, what else can we do?

Seems that the vulnerability lies in the magnetic strip which is easily copied.
Maybe we should have the option of a card without the strip and just use chip & pin outlets 💡Steve

According to my bank they they don’t even need your card, although there are 16 numbers on the card, a large part of the number is the same for each type of card. They don’t actually need the card for online fraud, they just use random numbers until they get a hit.
CNP, ‘card not present’ is the main source of card fraud since chip & pin came in.

Watch out, there seems to a concerted effort by these *ankers to get account details this week via emails 😥 I have had two from Nat West and one from the Nationwide stating that they have noticed that my accounts have had “login” errors and I should got to the web address in the email and update my account details.
No bank will ever ask you to do this so don’t even go there as there is a good chance that you may get something secretly downloaded onto your computer, usually “pop-unders” or “trackers” even if you have Anti Virus/Spyware installed
I wonder how many people have fallen for this, probably the elderly who are not to street wise 😥
