UP to a dozen jobs have been lost at the Newry branch of Shop Electric.
The company went into administration on Friday, and all branches across Northern Ireland ceased business yesterday morning (Monday November 3).
“This is an absolute shame,” said Mayor Jackie Patterson.
“There were about 12 people working there and they relied on these jobs.”
Mayor Patterson said that the closure would be a body blow to the Hill Street area.
“It’s important that the Hill Street remains as vibrant as possible.
“That shop was always busy with people paying their electricity bills, for many people it was a focal point.”
Joint administrator Richard Fleming of KPMG accountants said,”Shop Electric has suffered from competitive pressures and squeezed margins, as the pre-Christmas seasonal upturn has failed to emerge.”
The store had been part of Northern Ireland Electricity, before it was sold in a management buyout.
