ParticipantHi, I dont know if anyone can help, but i have an AEG 86741 with a problem that AEG say does not exist or can be rectified by doing a ‘cleaning cycle’ every once in a while.
The machine is now over a year old, so out of warranty. Basically the tray that you put powder in always has mould in it. We clean it, and the mould then returns a few washes later. When the tray is removed, you can see the opening inside is also mouldy suggesting a leak of water, lack of water throughput or something similar.. I am not a domestic engineer!
AEG tell me the reason for this is that we are not carrying out a ‘cleaning wash’ in between normal washes. Our previous machine never had any issues and worked great for 15yrs.. However, taking their word for it we have carried out the wash cycles as suggested religiously, but this does not make any difference at all.
I know a friend of mine had an AEG with the same problem, which lasted for around 4 yrs before konking out. Basically the machine stopped working and the cause was traced to a water leak causing the electronics to fail.
I get the feeling this is the same type of fault on my machine, however im sure that AEG do not wish to admit liability.
Does anyone know any more about this issue, has experienced it or can assist in pin-pointing the problem?
I would appreciate any assistance anyone can provide on the matter.
Cheers

The formation of mould in the soap tray is dealt with here:

Various reasons; the most common of them is fabric conditioner. It’s really quite horrible stuff. It’s basically a liquid grease with perfume in it and is the finest way of waterproofing a towel known to man.
Regular cleaning and service washes are the only way of dealing wth it.

I had an AEG that had a mouldy drawer problem. Like you, I was forever cleaning it. That machine lasted 3 years, then the bearings knackered up. Every second or third wash was done at 60 degrees, yet the mould still reappeared. I came to the conclusion that steam from the wash tub was condensing in the powder drawer area, exacerbating the problem.
A Zanussi replaced it, and it too has occasional mould issues in the drawer area. This particular machine has an awkwardly designed soap box that allows mould to grow where you cannot get at it easily.

Thanks all!
It doesnt look like there is a fix to this is issue then really. Maybe the fact that the machine heats water internally has a bearing on this matter..?
Anyway it doesnt look like my mrs will be a happy bunny, lets hope it breaks down soon and she will get her way with a new machine!!
Any recommendations as to which machine is quiet, reliable and doesnt mould up???
By the way a great site, so keep up the good work!

All machines heat internally and all types of machines suffer from black, gunged up drawers under the right conditions.
