ParticipantI am alittle nearer to the start date of my new extension/kitchen…but still plenty of time to do my ‘research’. I am presently veering towards Neff/Bosch but may consider Siemens/Miele/AEG/Smeg. I will be getting a wide ceramic hob plus a wok burner unit. Then, either a built in double oven or single oven with a separate steam combination oven. Still have a fully functioning Bosch dishwasher….Is there anyway to expect a german or british made product based on model number?
Additionally, will consider a largish american fridge freezer…GEC is the current favourite. I suppose Maytag as well. Both have 5 years warranty?
Also thinking of narrow 30cm wine cooler…so far Caple and CDA on my list. Again any idea of country or other options?
Finally, I am impressed by the Gutmann hood. Anyone consider distance selling if I dont go with the kitchen-man locally?
thanks

Hi zleon,
There are, to all intents, no British made machines these days bar some Stoves/Belling cookers, some dryers from Crosslee and some Norfrost freezer stuff so far as I am aware.
There is no way to determine the country of origin from the model number that is understandable.
Miele is all German, the rest, no guarantees I’m afraid.
GEC and Maytag are both fine IMO.
Caple and CDA wine coolers probably come from the same sweat shop in China, most do if they appear sensibly priced.
Gutmann I am not familiar with.

HI Zleon,
Yes the 300mm wine coolers you mention from CDA/Caple are both from the same Chinese factory – They are fine but there are models in the Caple range with LED lights inside rather than a bulb, which looks better.
Guttman hoods are excellent quality wth high extraction rates but they are pricey.

Thanks for above information. I am not a huge wine drinker, but quite fancy the idea of a small wine storage. Unfortunately, CDA/Caple are the only make I am aware of producing 300mm wide coolers. Maybe I should just plunge for a standard 600mm. More brands available.
I note the Bosch/Siemens?Neff etc in the MFI carries a prefix of AXXXXX for model number. Certainly most of the items there were made in Germany? Or could it be that the parts are manufactured elsewhere, but assembled in Gerany??
Thanks again.August 26, 2007 at 6:01 pm #224876iadom

I am not a huge wine drinker either, 😉 we only have about 7 or 8 bottles between the two of us weekly 8) . 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of it is red so no need for a cooler, I am the main white/rose drinker, this wine stays in the garage and in the warmer months is popped into the fridge a couple of hours before. I also have a wine chiller jacket that is basically a jel pack that resides in the freezer, popped round a bottle it will chill it nicely in 30 minutes. Unless you are drinking plenty of white or rose wines then a chiller just seems like a rather expensive cupboard to me.

Hi Zleon,
One thing to note is that the low cost 300 wide ones are 1 temperature only, if you want 2 zone then generally you have to opt for a wider model.
But could you fill a 600 wide one?
Cheers

Dual zone coolers/cellar is significantly more expensive. As I am kitting out a new kitchen, I am afraid it is a luxury that I cannot stretch to. Would prefer spending the monies on steam oven or warming drawer….unless my numbers come out ( small problem.. got to buy the tickets first!!!)

According to an newish Fix it manual, it places Caple under the Fagor group.

KeymasterOnly partially correct, but really not correct at all. IIRC there were a few dishwashers and a couple of other bits and peices from Fagor, but not a lot. Most ovens where Meneghetti (sp?), refrigeration varied although a lot appeared Chinese, Haier dishwashers, Siltal washers.
What does the Fix It manual know about appliances anyways? 😉

Perhaps, but it says in the spare part directry, that Caple comes under the Fagor group of companies. Still they could own them but not nessecary that they’re made in Spain. Look at Ford, they’re supposed to be from the big U.S but made in Germany previously Dagenham.
September 6, 2007 at 4:02 pm #224884kwatt
KeymasterThey are not owned by Fagor, the Caple brand is owned by Maurice Lay last I heard and sourced a fair bit of their appliances through PAB.
Info here and has been for a while. 😉
It’s factually wrong.

Hi there,
Maurice Lay are no different to CDA and just source products from various OEM/branded manufacturers. PABL do not supply them anything at all.
Ovens and hobs all from Meneghetti Italy/Whirlpool cooling/dishwashers – Not Haier/Washing machine and Washer dryer from Fagor though.Greaseater.
