I am a Sub Contracted Miele Engineer, as with ALL machines a smell can be caused by many things (there could be a blockage).
The system used Miele to save detergent (used in other makes too) is a float (ball) in the sump hose- this prevents soap powder dissapearing down the waste & keeps it in the tub. One downfall from this system & the design of their waste (see pipe up to top of inside wall) is that the machine holds quite a bit of water in the machine after the wash has finished. If bacteria is in the machine & in this water it grows & it smells.
As in all machines a boil wash (service wash) regularly will help to prevent this.
But what i do & recommend you do is to programme an extra rinse & an extra high water level on your machine & the dirty water should be thoroughly flushed away after use.
Miele should give you advise (not technical) if you ring their helpline. They shouldn’t try to flog you descaler or anything else.August 17, 2007 at 9:51 pm #224908candyking

HI, may be able to help here, we have found that doing a service wash (ie with no clothes) does not work . we have found that you actually have to do a real hot wash on a regular basis. Theory goes that you require the water pouring through the holes in the drum from the washing on spin , washing the tub down after the gunge has been loosened by the high temp wash. Takes a couple of months but will smell a lot fresher.
PS AVOID CONSISTENTELY WASHING AT 30 OR 40 DEGREES , ALWAYS WASH YOUR TOWELS AT 60.

Candyking, try this one 😉
All that was part of the training that Mandells mentioned so, I’m guessing, that he’s already done that.
I dunno Mandells, I can’t really think of much else beyond backfilling, which I’m sure you’ve also investigated. 😕
I certainly don’t know of any specific issues with the Miele machines on this front and I can’t think on how the Honeycomb drum would make any difference to the problem either.

Have you tried just plain good old “Soda Crystals” ? – I use this in my Bosch whenever I do a service wash (90’Deg) & then leave the door open for the night – This seems to stop any bad smells. Do this every month whether it needs it or not & you’ll not get the smell anywhere near as bad.
Hope this helps
PS:I agree that the drum type should make no difference about the smell.

Crap liquid detergent and low temp washes save the planet but not your machine.
I mixed a bottle of bleach with very hot water in the machine then turned off and left over night.
Then put it on drain and left again for a while, This way it does the drum and drainage.
Don’t try the bleach on a full 95 degree program as it could bubble alot.
i’ve done this a few times with no effect to rubber bits so far.August 21, 2007 at 8:53 pm #224915nomadPaul

There is a theory that using soda crystals on a regular basis can cause corrosion on the aluminium cross on the rear of the inner tub and this , in turn , can cause black flecks on clothes or in worst case scenarios failure of the cross. We have been advised not to offer this solution to customers. -
