ParticipantHas to be a Washer Dryer – Can’t Afford a Miele…!
Hi,
Hope that got all y’alls attention. Basically I live in a small flat, with nowhere to dry clothes outside and not enough room to have two separate machines.
(Although I had toyed with the idea of banging a tumble dryer in the bottom of the airing cupboard, but that is just stupid and would require a condenser and an electricity outlet being installed.) Also to buy two separate good quality machines would be a lot more expensive than one all in one.So I am looking around the 400 – 550 mark, there seem to be lots of shops and online stores offering the same kind of models for differing prices. What my choices seem to have boiled down to are these:
SMEG WDF16BA 5 Year Warranty Preferred Choice
BOSCH WVT1260 2 Year Warranty ( I think)
Siemens WXD1260 2 Year Warranty
FAGOR FUS-6116 5 Year WarrantyWhen I looked on Which comparison site a Zanussi came up as Best Buy as well I think. But I can’t remember how much that was or what it cost. Apparently they all seem to be poor at the rinse cycle in the main.
My preferred choice is the Smeg because of the 5 year warranty, Fagor has one too and is quite cheaper, but I have no knowledge of them as a brand, or compared to these. I have noticed a few posts on here about the SMEG WDF16BA, people having problems etc. I know they can be noisy, but my current rented washer dryer makes a hell of alot of noise and that is a crappy hotpoint, and I noticed the SMEG has a variable rpm anyway.
I suppose what I am asking is, is the BOSCH or Siemens a better bet even with 3 years less warranty? And warrantees can be quite expensive.
Are there any others out there? It is a shame that the ISE does not produce one. I think they should because more and more people are living and are going to live in places where space is at a premium, which causes idiots like me to go into long winded writing mode!!!
I notice there has been some discussion already on washer dryers.
here circled around the best washer dryer, and of course the miele came out on top and here specifically on fitted washer dryers, i want a freestanding one:
Any responses would be most greatly appreciated.

N.B. I have had a good look around this site, learned alot of things, more than at Which anyway. Major kudos to this site, will recommend, totally agree with things not being built to last, which is so against the environment. What is the point in having an AAA rated machine by hotpoolset if it is going to be replaced in 5 years by another machine with the same carbon footprint in manufacturing terms………bleh.August 18, 2007 at 8:10 pm #225116Penguin45

First three are all reasonable choices, although the Bosch and Seimens are basically the same appliance. The Bosch comes with the two year warranty.
The SMEG is held to be “different” by a large proportion of the independent trade and therefore not popular. Personally, I like them.
The Fagor is a bit flimsy…….
Provided that you can work within the limitations of the dryer (half load drying, extended drying times and the expense), you have made a couple of sensible picks.

Look no further than those two machines. They are from the same stable but out of the two I would probably go for the Siemens as i feel it is easier to use. If you revisit <a href="http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=12247&highlight=smeg+wdf16ba
” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow”>this thread Goatboys comments are still true today. As far as the fagor is concerned leave well alone 😉 If you click the link at the bottom of my post to the buyers guide there is quite a bit of info you may be interested in 8)

Correct me if I am wrong, aren’t all/most current production BSH washer dryers actually SMEG machines .

Interesting – the Seimens and the Bosch are both the Spanish Balay-type construct.
SMEG for me then…….

It seems that the integrated BSH range are Smeg, the freestanding ones are Balay from Spain.
Quote from someone who knows, 😉
‘The integrated Siemens/Neff/Bosch washer dryers are Smeg but not integrated washers.
(for now)The free standing washer dryers are B/S/H Spanish made. The Spanish washer dryer is quite good these days.
All the washing machines are B/S/H produced in Poland,Spain and the higher end types in Germany.’

Hi Guys,
Thank you for the advice. It has been very helpful, and i can see that it is somewhat down to personal opinion as to whether SMEG is better than SIEMENS/BOSCH. Especially in light of the fact that the BSH standalone washer dryers are all made in Spain. I really do not know what difference that makes.
But I think it will probably be the SMEG what with the 5 year warranty and the general support from you guys. Now i just have to find a reputable seller….
One thing about any Warranty is, is it void if I install it myself. I have installed a washing machine myself before with no problem, but I heard that i had to be done by a qualified tech. Any thoughts?
Also, You know, after the Miele, Which rated an AEG Electrolux L16830 and a John Lewis JLWD1408 as the the next best options. I believe the John Lewis is made by AEG. It has a 3 year warranty, but I thought that AEG was a step down. I think they base some of their review on reliability and customer satisfaction, which is partly why they score high.

The AEG, Elextrolux & John Lewis are all basically Zanussi machines.
Installing the machine yourself should not be a problem as long as you follow the installation instructions, be sure to remove the transit bolts.

Thanks iadom.
Yes, following the instructions is vital, as are the transit bolts, thank you. I have already looked through the manuals online and there is nothing too complicated. The hardest part for delivers will be lifting it up a flight of stairs.
