In changing my kitchen round I am considering putting a rangemaster classic 90 against an internal wall with a Matsui 90cm chimney cooker hood over.
    Two questions.
Is this cooker hood ok – as it is much cheaper than the rangemaster one?
How can I duct the hood to an outside wall. It is at right angles to the cooker. Would I be better just using the hood as a filter and fit a vent axia as the extractor?
    Thanks

Not sure about quality of make but what I would say is if its going above a range with gas hobs, make sure you follow the min height in the hoods handbook. If no booklet available, a rule of thumb above gas is 750mm above hob top and above an electric hob, 650mm. 😀

No, it’s most probably absolute rubbish. 😉

There’s a reason that good cooker hoods are expensive, all you have to do is look at the extraction rate in M3ph and you’ll quickly see that all is not equal.

I would expect that the Matsui is a low-cost alternative with good reason, designed to look the part but not necessarily be any use in real terms, in fact, I’d be surprised if it were.

Have a read at this article and a lot will be explained.

Essentially there is no cheap way to do this, if you want to invest in a hood that will actually do more than the cheap ones that buzz a bit, light up and little else then feel free to buy a cheap one. If however you require one to actually draw the steam and smell from above the cooking surface effectively you require two things, proper ventilation routed correctly and a decent hood that will draw that out the room.

A Vent-Axia fan is designed to draw a modicum of condensation from the room, not cooking smells or grease, a cooker hood is (or at least should be) and it is not a suitable replacement for a good hood properly installed.

If I’ve come across a little strong here I do apologise but I’ve seen this so often, a decent cooker totally spoiled by a cheap hood added as a decoration when in fact it should be a very functional item. It just annoys me on occasion. 😉

    Thanks k
The article was useful. I certainly don’t intend to spoil the refitted kitchen with a cheap hood.
Do you have any thoughts on how I can vent from the chimney hood (I’ll probably go for the rangemaster unless you can suggest another black 90cm chimney hood)?
The cooker faces an internal wall and the nearest external wall is 2 metres to the right of the cooker.
    Thanks.

    Re: Cooker Hood installation

The only way is to run the ducting into the ceiling void under the upstairs floor…unfortunately if your joists run at 90o to the wall with the hood on then it’s impossible to run to the nearest outside wall (6in holes in 8in joists is not too clever 8O)

If the hose then has to run much more than a couple of metres to follow the joist line you start to get into condensation problems within the ducting…this might be overcome with condensation traps plumbed to a waste pipe but most people don’t even go there! 😕

My fingers are crossed for your joists running parallel to the wall 😆

I should add that if it’s impossible to run the duct in the ceiling void then you could surface mount it and box it in just below the ceiling but somehow they never look right 😕

Clive beat me to it. 😉

If you can’t get into the ceiling space the only real option is to vent from the side top of the chimney to the wall really. If you have a run of wall cupboards there and you use the square ducting you can do not a bad job of hiding it.

What about charcoal filters and use it in re-circulation, thus doing away with the ducting :con:

Na, that’s hopeless doing that IMO.

I know it’s not the ideal solution, but as I’m sure you know too long a run or
too many bends will seriously impede the performance of the hood.

Just thinking of the easy way out (as usual) 😉

Matsui hoods are Chinese and Rangemaster hoods are Italian.

    Re: Cooker Hood installation

The Matsui is quieter, has greater extraction and is £250 cheaper!
I’m still not sure how I can get the venting ( and the flat stuff on a straight run looks my best bet) to attach to the chimney hood. It looks like the Matsui has a rectanglar top.
And my joists run the wrong way – unless I vent it out into the conservatory…………………………..

Fine if you want a humid conservatory will associated curry smells and the like 😆

Incidentally, Matsui (Curry’s own brand created name) may claim to have a greater extraction but that would be under their own ideal test conditions 😉
