ParticipantHas it had it? I have a Beko fridge that has a strong chemical smell and I am wondering if this is a gas leak? At first I thought it was an electrical burn smell but the fridge seems to be working ok. If it has a leak can it be repaired? The fridge is 2 yo and has developed this problem recently. It is worse in the morning when it has been left undisturbed. I am also concerned if this could be harmful! Any help would be appreciated though I am expecting to have to buy a new one. The extended warranty now looks like a good idea. Doh! 😥

Thank you for the link. I don’t think it is a food problem. It is clean and the problem arose after it was moved to decorate. The smell is at times overpowering and the concern remains. It was interesting that the article said that there aren’t any mechanical or gaseous components that smell as a general rule. Still at a loss.

Hi Garb,
There is noting in the fridge that will smell unless you burn it, which is highly unlikely. Most of the old gases, R143a and R12 have no odour while the new gas is iso-butane basicacally so you’d smell that like cooking gas pretty much. But, on the newer fridges especially, if any leaks it won’t cool properly as it would them be short of gas. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that it isn’t leaking gas.
There is nothing else in a fridge’s construction that will produce an odour so it has to be an external source.
Food spillage is the No. 1 cause (an about the only one) of bad smells from a fridge, even in at the door seals, behind panels and all sorts of places.

hi
have you changed the light bulb recently,
there are a lot of times when the light stays on even if door shut, you will notice a burn mark on the cover of light, this will also burn the plastic and you get that horrible smell.
def not gas leak as fridge would not be workingAugust 27, 2007 at 6:54 pm #225576arosview
ParticipantAlso check if there is a dead rodent near the compressor. Mice love the cosy area for nesting. You might have moved it to touch the compressor when you shifted the fridge for decorating. Warm dead mice give off a really powerful chemical smell!!!

Thank you all. I shut it down for 48 hours, cleaned it thoroughly and threw out everything that had been in there a while. I checked behind the fridge – nothing obvious. There was some paint on the copper piece leading from the compressor and some water (odourless) in the evaporation tray, the light was also working fine and no rodents. After its reboot the smell has not returned. It is still a mystery (Kwatt, you are probably right though I know not what) and all seems well. Thanks again for all the input. Appreciated.
