ParticipantHi, everyone – and a big thank you to all those helpful people giving up their time to answer questions for us….
We are about to buy our first-ever brand new fridge freezer – and finalltyreplace the counter height Electrolux freezer that I bought ‘new’ from Buyers and Sellers shop 33 years ago. It does still work – but probably at a Z rating now -with far too much frosting up… Still, pretty good service! The fridge freezer we’re replacing also works – it’s a Zanussi ZF 77 / 33, which was passed on to us about 12 years ago by my parents. They replaced it because of problems with its fridge door. Having read posts on this site, I’m sure all the problems -which have of course got worse – are due to the door being incorrectly fitted when switched – on delivery – to left hand opening. (interior light not working; ice forming at back of bottom shelf under the veg. drawers; inefficient storage of fresh fruit / veg….)
Have looked at lots (Harrods sale – fairyland prices; John Lewis – bit more realistic!); read Which ( I know its out of date before printed); read posts here. Almost settled on Miele KFN 8452 SD (or also 8462?) (space available ; must be less than 200 high, prob. also less than 195; 60 w ;60ish deep.) Then read about expensive servicing…. I like the Miele layout – ‘cos it’s like the one we’re used to! Don’t want ice makers, do want door space to be used to maximum. Want fridge shelves rather than more boxes. Am prepared to pay for real quality – i.e. longer life span. but this is a real extravagance for us, so want to get it right. Do want as quiet as possible (so no self -defrost freezers?)
The freezer needs to be waist ish high, 60w, 60 deep ish (current one is 55, but room for a bit wider. The 2 will stand side by side, but don’t match at the moment. …and, I really do want to switch thef-f door to left opening (will not have room to open properly on right ‘cos of existing cupboard)l Quite like the Bosch Logixx? …or Miele F1365 s (like 4 drawers; and A ++ – but not really saving much energy is it?
Sorry for long message – but advice welcomed – including other brands.

Hi Judie
If you want the nice layout, better than average efficiencies then you are indeed going to need to pay those “fairyland prices” 😉
A good all round range would be the Bosch appliances, which are well made and have a two year warranty. if you can afford to go the extra mile then yes the Miele range would be an excellent choice.

Many thanks for your reply, Don.
I do realise that you ‘get what you pay for’ – was just a bit concerned about cost of repairs to Miele. I know it’s a reliable make – but there’s always the exception….?
Also – is a frost-free freezer going to be noticeably louder / noisier than not frost – free? Defrosting once, or twice a year won’t be a problem for me – but other goodies come with the frost free ranges…..and finally, is there anywhere I can recycle the old f-f – I’m sure it would work better with some expert tlc? ..don’t like adding to landfill if it can be avoided. They are from the Slovenia, generally sold by you local independent company. You can view their products on http://www.gorenje.co.uk. which will also list the UK retailers. We’ve been selling them for about three years and not had a refrigeration failure.

And saying that Liebherr make tower cranes, mining trucks and excavators, so i think they would know something about fridges wouldn’t you?

Nothing wrong with Liebherr/Miele.
Even if the implication is that they can make a cold crane………….

No Penguin, I meant that if they can make something as reliable as a tower crane, then they must be good for fridges.
Miele definitlySeptember 5, 2007 at 9:55 pm #225761Judie
ParticipantRe: a new fridge freezer – miele? advice please
Well, that answers my question, then…. I think ?!
Thank you all for the input – now, will the Miele last me for another 33 years ??!
No reply needed really…
