ParticipantHi
I’ve got a hotpoint BFI62, about 4 years old I think. Openened it up this evening after putting it on last night to find the leftmost two lights were flashing about once per second (heavy and medium wash lights). The pots were covered in muck, kind of a gritty dark stuff and there was a small pool of dirty water in the bottom along with my dishwasher tablet. I can’t make the lights stop flashing, either by turning off (with the button on the door) or pressing or holding the select button.
I’ve searched the forum but can’t see this specific fault. any ideas?September 3, 2007 at 7:04 pm #226518iadom

Neons 1+ 2 flashing indicate a drain timeout error. Pump blockages are very common on this Indesit machine.
Small pieces of glass, plastic, bone, wood, sweetcorn etc will all stop the drain pump from running.
If you enter ‘Indesit AND pump’ in the search facility for this forum you will get several hits.

Cheers Jim!
So what can I do?
Does it need a new pump or can it be cleaned? I’m fairly technically minded and if it’s just a case of cleaning a pump then I’m sure I can manage that. Roughly where is the pump? Before you warn me I know to unplug first 😉

Okay, I took the base of the dishwasher off and removed the pump, didn’t find anything too innocuous in there but gave it a good clean. However, sitting on the bottom panel of the dishwasher was a small circular fine mesh filter with a rubber outer circumference that was just the right size to fit in the pump inlet. So thinking I was clever, I figured someone must have had this off before and not put the filter back, so I put it in and set the dishwasher off again – same problem. This time when I’ve dismantled it I found that the filter I put in had instantly clogged up. Now I’m not feeling so clever 🙁 I guess it clogged up immediately because I’d taken the main filter out before tipping the dishwasher up so stuff has got behind it.
I can imagine that this filter is like a last line of defence to stop stuff getting into the pump, but as it’s just as tough to get to as the pump it seems a bit useless if it’s going to block up. Does anyone know if it’s supposed to be there?

Needs to be dragged out I’m afraid. The base plate has to be removed to access the pump, a few towels on the floor first, then lie it on its left hand side looking from front. Follow the grey outlet hose into the machine and you will locate the pump. In most cases it only needs the obstruction removing, be sure to seat the small rubber ‘O’ ring back correctly.
If you get stuck you can always try the link below. 😉

You must have been composing your last post at the same time as I was replying. Even the smallest piece of material will jam the pump.
There is no small filter in the pump, was this ‘filter’ in the base? It sounds very much like an inlet valve hose filter to me.

Hi Jim
Yes it was just rattling around in the base. I reassembled everything last night without the filter and set it running on a rinse. That ran fine so I put it on a full wash overnight with one of those finish dishwasher cleaner bottles and got up this morning to find it had run the whole cycle fine 🙂Cheers for your help, a total positive result at no cost, fantastic 🙂
If the filter is an inlet valve filter then does that mean I need to dissasemble again to put it in?
What do you need a filter on the inlet valve for anyway? surely it’s clean water going in? Our house is entirely mains with no cold water tank so it’s even drinking water going into our dishwasher.Cheers again for the help

If you disconnected the cold fill pipe when you pulled the machine out you may have dropped the filter into the base, difficult to see how but stranger things have happened.
This is a seal as well as a filter. The filter is to proctect the innards of the fill valve from any grit or sediment from the mains supply. On the odd occasion when your mains water is discoloured this gunge can damage the inlet valve.
I would check to see if you have a rubber seal of any kind in the connection that you screw onto the inlet valve, if not you need to replace the small filter/seal or you may suffer from leaks, not nice on integrated appliances.
