ParticipantMy Whirlpool side by side fridge freezer S20D FSS10-A/G is American style but does NOT have the ice/water dispenser facility.
Everything seems to be functioning just fine but there is a knocking noise from the rear bottom right when the fridge is (don’t know the terminology) booting the temp ? doing whatever fridges do periodically.
The noise literally sounds like somebody knocking at the front door.
I took off the rear panel and the noise is coming from a white box on the bottom right and the label on this box reads as follows.ITW ISPRACONTOLS ITAL
Lot 22223 BZATS 1804
220-240 volts
CU 6000000 461950234812BI have no idea what this part of the appliance the above is.
All local refrigeration repair companies have quoted me £50 callout plus parts and labour but warn me that it will almost certainly be a total cost of in excess of £250 !!!
The machine is just 2 years old.
I guess I’d just like confirmation from someone that the above quotes sound reasonable and I’m not being taken advantage of for something that might be very simply cured.Any help or advice will be gratefully received

Hi,
That’s the compressor and it is, most likely, the most expensive part to go wrong. It sounds as if the pump, which is suspended on springs inside there, has come off and that’s what’s giving you the noise. The costs quoted are probably about on the money for the job I’m afraid.
You can complain to Whirlpool but I doubt it’d do much good.

Thanks for your response albeit bad news 🙁
Just shows how much I know about refrigeration ……. I thought the compressor was the round black thing 🙂

KeymasterSorry, you may be right as I may have read that original post wrong. That’s what I get for doing 6 at once. 😉
I’m not sure, I can’t find a diagram for that machine but all that moves is the pump in the compressor and a cooling fan if it’s fitted pretty much.

Relays on the PCB inside the white box can click if the board is faulty however I wouldn’t say it sounded like a knock on the front door.
Same faults can occur on the machine without water/ice dispenserTake a look here for a bit of bed time reading.

OMG !!!
You weren’t kidding about bedtime reading ………. I’m falling asleep 😆After reading that thread which I didn’t think applied to my problem but maybe an indication of what my machine will do next, I have decided to do the following:-
a) Move some stuff out of the freezer to my Aunt who has room in hers and basically run my stock down to zero and turn the offending article off before it starts misbehaving with temperatures.
b) Phone Whirlpool – probably won’t gain anything but nothing ventured ….. seems a couple of people had good results, will work on strategy of approach to that overnight 😉
c) Might have a go at replacing those capacitors ……. frightening prospect but then so was replacing components in my pc the first time I did it. I will at least have a probe remove the box and take a look
What damage can I do ? …… if I have a go at the soldering what’s the worst case scenario ?
If the machine simply doesn’t work and I would need a new board I haven’t lost anything ……. but if it blows up that’s a different matter altogether 😆Thank you both so much sparing some time on my problem 🙂

Forgot to add ……… knocking on the front door ………. my front door is glass and people tend to tap on it with their knuckles and that’s what I thought the noise was when I first heard it ……. somebody insistently rapping on the pane. I suppose its more like a loud clicking – I need it to make the noise again so that I can analyse it and of course because I want it to do it …….. it hasn’t 😉
