ParticipantI posted this elsewhere and probably in the wrong place.
My problem is with an Indesit w103 the larger bearing disintegrated upon removal leaving the outter casing in place. I have removed the other bearing and seal but cant get behind this bearing casing to remove it.
Is there a way? Am i correct in assuming that the total parts are the backplate, outer bearing, inner bearing and seal? Or are there spacers inbetween the bearings? I can get the bearing kit for £10 but the backplate will cost almost £60 which seems prohibitive. Any help would be great.

the only way to get the outer bearing race out is to try , with a sharp edged chisel and endevour to shift the race by hitting chisel with heavy hammer! if you are very very lucky you could work a slot in the race enogh to move the race…be very careful as if you miss the chisel or it slips fingers do suffer, if you haven’t got an edge in about 20mins or the race hasn’t moved give up..BE LUCKY. 😉 there are no spacers to worry about.

Thanks Richard
What a really cr+p design. If they had chosen a bearing just 1mm larger on the outer casing then a large socket would easily drive it out. Maybe they intend for me to buy a new backplate or even better still a new machine. My local engineer called them in-de-sh1t rather than indesit. But then I guess you pros already know that!!

yes, we know…and unfortunately the users know too by now..what are you going to do now?? replace or have a BASH?. if it’s replacement there is lots of info about w/m on this site, and lots of posts from users about which is the best…ie..best value, best economy rating, best results, best reliability. if you have got an independant servicing firm near you just ask..we can be a mine of info. 😉 😀

As im under pressure from her indoors decided to buy backplate complete with bearing. Everything else on the machine seems ok. Did give the bearing a few cursory whacks but it just took lumps out of the chisel! As an engineer (not domestic goods) it just annoys the pants off me to fail this way.

You couldnt make this up really could you?
I purchased the backplate complete with bearings for said machine. Assembled it guess what? The backplate wouldnt fit onto the drum housing. Upon measuring the old plate and the new one the new one is 3mm larger so no amount of cajouling was going to make it fit. My local shop said it was the correct part number 081781 so everyones confused ?????????
Rang hotpoint they told me that for the machine of my serial number i gave, you cant buy just the backplate anymore. I told them I have just bought one!!!! They said yes but that is old stock and wont fit your machine it will be too big!!!! So I now have no option but to buy complete drum assembly which is …..wait for it……£189!! I informed her that a new machine was this price and she said “so buy a new machine then”So lets recap.
1 The bearing ( a replaceable item) went
2 The bearing left the old casing behind
3 The casing cannot be removed due to a crap design
4 The bearings are in a back plate that costs £57
5 I buy the backplate its the wrong one
6 Correct one is not available
7 Need new drum complete for £189
8 Shop wont take back backplate cos its dirty and usedAbsolutely unbelievable.
Moral of the story DONT BUY AN INDESIT.

Thanks for the advice Winkle. But you know buying an Indesit isn’t nearly as bad as trying to fix one….That’s a whole different story as we in the appliance repair trade are all too well aware. 🙁
People will always buy Indesit, but in our experience… only the once! 😆
All the best with your new Bosch machine…..The bearings won’t go on that, let me assure you. 😉

A new back plate cannot be fitted to an existing drum, reason being the drum shrinks slightly after a period of time, i,ve heard of one or two engineers claiming they have fitted a new one but i,ve never managed it if the bearings are totally shot its the works i,m afraid.
