ParticipantMe again. First my washer dryer, then my tabletop dishwasher, now this!
Anyway, I hope someone can help me to make an informed choice as to attempt diy repair/engineer/scrap and replace…
Make: Electrolux
Model: ER2940B
Manu date: 1991I know this is an old appliance, but I have no faith in modern white goods these days (ie I want an appliance to last – I don’t want to throw it out and replace in 3 years time when the warranty runs out – I have neither the time or money for that sort of malarky and we live far too much in a throw away society wasting resources etc.)
This fridge freezer has given faithful service over the 16 years – 2 light bulbs is all…
This morning, I noticed the bottom 3 levels of the fridge (salad trays plus two trays upto middle height) all the food was frozen!
The fridge is constantly humming away – I’m sure it used to cut out at some point and kick off and go quiet.
The freezer could do with a defrost as it hasn’t been done since I moved 18 months ago, but would that cause this?
I noticed teh fridges drain plug was iced solid. Removed the residue. Switched off and left fridge door open for an hour and cleaned all the ice out and water once the pipes behind the plastic rear guard were starting to defrost in the fridge etc.
Plugged back in – ice is forming back of fridge. I suspect its going to ice up again.
What would people suggest I do?

ParticipantFast switch is off.
Thanks, I suspected the thermostat to be at fault too – just needed another opinion from the experts to back up my theory.
Thanks for your help – I couldn’t find th part on the whitegoods site, but googled what I wanted and I have found the thermostat for about £25 – I think its worth a go.
BTW, is the thrmostat located inside the fridge area behind the plastic cowling on the back panel of the fridge interior. Or have I got to get to very back of teh appliance? Thanks,
Sarah

The thermostat Vial is held by a plastic retainer and is held by a screw the thermostat you require can be purchased @shop
http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=27_522_523&products_id=147A snip at £7.93
When replacing take care not to damage this vial
Hope this helps

One word of caution – you will need the genuine electrolux thermostat for that particular model, the one listed above is a universal one and wont work properly.
Unlike most fridge freezers where the thermostat switches the compressor off, on yours the thermostat switches ON a small electronic valve which then stops the gas flow to the fridge, it is also possible that the valve is faulty.
