Hi, I’d be grateful for any tips you can give me on replacing a door hinge on this washer dryer.

I have bought a new hinge and hinge bearings as the old ones had snapped. I tried to replace them today – managed to prise the door apart to change the bearings and put in the new hinge. The last job was to attach the door to the washer. I unscrewed the bolts holding the old broken hinge to the washer – and was sickened to hear a ‘thud’ of the hinge backplate falling down inside the machine. Stupidly, I had not considered that there was a backplate (never done anything like this before). I can’t find a way to access the inside bottom of the machine but it looks like, with the top off, I could manoeuvre enough to fit a new backplate, so I have ordered one.

Could anyone tell me if there is a good way to access the inside of the machine so that I can fit the door and new backplate without dropping it again and losing it forever?!

    Many thanks,
    Angela

Guys feel free to delete this as I have no trade rights here….

    Angela,

Having replaced a hinge & tap plate on a hotpoint at home this week might I gently suggest that retreiving the old tap plate might be an idea? Mine is a Hotpoint WM64 so no idea if the internal configuration is the same – but there is a removable panel at the bottom of the rear of my machine that would enable me to pick up any components that have fallen down inside.

Might save you the cost of a new one if you can find it?

As far as the mechanics of doing it… I had to stick my hand down between the powder drawer & the case to hold the tap plate in place whilst I balanced the door on the new hinge against the outside of the case & screwed the bolts through with my free hand….

Of course I had switched off the power & unplugged before doing any of that!!!!

    Just a thought.

    Thanks for this David.

Just spotted that I have got the model number wrong – it is a WD72.

I’ve just had a look, but I don’t have a bottom section at the back that could be removed – just a complete metal sheet that covers the whole back. I’m concerned that, if I undo the screws holding this on, they will all have backplates behind them, and I haven’t a clue how I would put them back in!

When the soap drawer on my machine is taken out, the housing for the drawer remains, and so blocks access to the inside of the machine. Its surrounded by four screws which, again, I’m wary about removing. It certainly looks more straightforward to get behind the hinge area from the power drawer than from the top, though, so I’d welcome any thoughts on whether I can safely remove these screws.

    Thank you in advance,
    Angela

Its at this point that the guys with experience need to step in ! I’d not be able to comment as I’ve not had a machine like yours & after all I’m ‘only’ a home user & ‘DIY’er …these guys are the Pros…..

If you unplug the machine, then tilt it backwards and lean it against a wall or cupboard, you should be able to feel or look underneath to find the backplate.

Remove the lid to allow you to refit. Dont remove the drawer, there is room to reach down. Another way is to release the outer lip of the door seal and furl it back to allow access.

It worked! I found the backplate in the way you advised, and it is now fitted. Job’s a good ‘un! Many thanks Jim.

And thanks David too for your help,

    Angela
