What’s the difference ?

I’m pretty sure that some members of UKW and even members of the newly formed WTA are going to ask themselves just what is the difference between the two organisations.

I think we have a duty of care to point these out and once we have arrived at accepted definitions, then these differences should be posted as sticky’s on the top of the WTA forum.

It is my belief that we need to clearly explain that, whilst the exclusive use of psuedonyms or nicknames are acceptable forms of identity in UKW forums. If they are to be used at all in the WTA forums, then there must be a register in clear view, within the WTA forums or as a sticky informing anyone who cares to enquire as to the actual true identity of the person using the nickname or psuedonym within any WTA forum.

If we are to represent the trade then we have to be able to say who we represent along with the names of their associated businesses.

We will need to do this to enable the WTA to both lobby and express the collective views of the independent service industry to various organisations and relevent bodies including government.

We must also clearly point out to members joining the WTA forums, in clear instructions that they alone are responsible for their own views, opinions and posts.

I stress this issue because I can see that it might be all too easy for people to fall into the trap of thinking that they may be cloaked with the same degree of annonymity, that they enjoy in the UKW forums.

    I don’t actually agree.

You’re really hung up on this anonymity thing. 😆

I’ll repeat, when everyone plays on a level field the game’s fair, when they don’t you need an advantage. Manufacturers, insurers and WP’s hide, why can’t we?

My opinion is that, without a blanket ruling that it would be nigh on impossible to enforce this.

Anyway, AGRI seems to manage and seems to get the ear of the DTI and CORGI using nicknames so, I don’t see that we’re any different.

Dont know about you Ken but when I log on to corgi i have to use my Registration and card no. so I dont see how the anonimity works on that one.
And who the (dickens edited) is AGRI when they’re at home ?

    Re: What’s the difference ?

I kinda agree with both here!! I posted a while ago a question asking why people don’t advertise their details, locations etc on their profiles. I personally like to know who I’m speaking to, but I realise that if forced to advertise your names etc, some people may not want to post.

The only issue way me have here is though is (and please correct me if I’m wrong), if lets say we start a debate on ‘WP’s paying less that others’ and under nicknames (such as sean pointed out… big bo11o@ks 😆 ), we get 200 people giving their views and support, would that count if we took that anywhere?

    Sorry, ARGI.

The Association of Registered Gas Installers. A trade association.

They are the biggest pain that CORGI has besides the HSE and DTI as they just give CORGI static constantly. Their website appears to be down ATM though.

That’s the whole point Adrian we need both.
The term ‘An Iron fist within a velvet glove’ was termed some time ago.
We saw UKW as the Iron fist and an effective T.A. as the velvet glove.
The only mistake I made was for the longest time I thought that Dasa would supply the second part Iwas wrong but only because up until this point in time they were the only option for the second part.

As for the ‘BIGGEST PAIN’ that has always been my roll for both organisations 😆

Word of warning Ken, If you insist on both organisations running exactly the same then there is no point in having both :rolls:

Not at all as it’s not my call. TBH it doesn’t bother me in the slightest as I will say what I think anyway, within reason.

The point is that the cloak of anonymity (supposed or real) allows people to post their opinion more freely than perhaps they would otherwise do, as we have seen countless times in here. In forums etc. where this is not the case you tend to find them much more “restrained” and it is my opinion that, if you want healthy debate and opinions, then you have to allow people the ability to choose for themselves rather than forcing what will be seen by some as Draconian rules. Again ti all comes back to freewill, do you allow the freewill to apply their own common sense or do you have to spell everything out for them?

I have great faith in the system of freewill and free speech as well you know and, it’s served me well thus far.

If anyone wants to sign with their real name, that’s their call to make and, by the same token and your own logic, I wouldn’t want to see these forums become a DASA Forum clone. 😉

I’m more than happy to leave the final say on this to the majority of the WTA council if you are ❓

This is a tricky one ,when I first joined I joined under an alias as I had just had the unpleasant experience of having a sheaf of my e-mails from the mailing list shoved up my nose by Jonathen Trubshaw ,telling me that as they were all derogatory towards NESN if I didn’t shuit up they would sue .
However I do wonder if we should “encourage” people to use a name where possible ,as for how we do that …

Encouragement to use or sign posts, no issue with me on that.

Telling people they have to, I just don’t feel it’s right.

    Re: What’s the difference ?

If we issue a membership number, any votes or lobbying we do can be quantified by a headcount of membership numbers. What I mean by that is you can say, as in your case Lawrence, membership number xxxxx thinks this or that, and in the case of a vote, the amount of people in favour……membership numbers… (long list). Then the voters or complainants can choose to be identified or not at their discretion but their opinion is still registered. This would apply in the event of a vote or lobby only. If necessary the TA can then ratify or moderate the individual member’s statement.
But I think it should be encouraged to be open and identifiable as that makes our TA more credible. It also gives us the moral high-ground.

In a fleeting moment of lucidity, I registered on the WTA site as ChrisC. No doubt this will fool no-one and the penguin abuse will continue….

From a purely professional point of view, handles should be a reasonable representation of someones name.

    Re: What’s the difference ?

It’s actually fairly amusing that, in almost all cases, people have used their own nicks as they have on here to sign up for the WTA site. I can even explain why…

On virtually every single website that there is any interaction on it asks for a username and password.

Hands up how many of us use our own names for most sites.

Most people have a regular username and password combination that they use for most all sites.

Despite how often you tell people what to do, you can write it over and over as I have done with many things on here, people just won’t read it. So that’s an exercise in futility although it has to be done for those that will read it and expect the information to be there.

Perfect example, the trade forums. As Dave will tell you we will usually get about an email a day requesting how to get access and yet, there’s loads of links pointing to the page that tells you how, the page has had 20,000 reads or so and even when people do read it they still muck it up.

Trying to force people to do something is a thing I’ve given up on.
