ParticipantHi
We have a Diplomat gas hob and a couple of months ago our resident cook and bottle washer informed me that one of the knobs was stuck. I checked it out and it was indeed stuck as if pressed down and wouldn’t turn. I tried to gently ease it up using a pair of grips but, no go. I didn’t want to force it so I just left it. Now, today, I’ve just been told that the exact same thing has happened to another knob.
Is this a common problem and, if so, is there anything I can use to free them off? There’s no evidence of grease build-up. Can the knob units be replaced or would it be more cost effective to simply replace the hob?
Any advice much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi
I wouldn’t be forcing the tap shafts in any way as they may snap and allow a gas escape ❗
The fault is quite common as the heat drys out the grease within the tap workings.
A qualified gas engineer (Corgi, see link below) would either re-grease or replace the tap/s 😀
Please do not for your own safety attempt any work on the appliance.Regards
Greg

Blimey, that was a blisteringly fast response!! Thanks.
I totally take your point about not forcing it and, believe me, I was very careful when I was doing it.
It sounds then like it’s probably time to replace the hob. If we got someone out I’d probablyget them to replace all four taps and I’m guessing this would lead to a bill in the region of £60 – 80? On the other hand I can probably pick up a new hob for less than £150.
Any recomendations as to makes to choose or probably more to the point, makes to avoid?
Cheers

Thanks Greg, thats been a great help. We’ve got a Neff oven so I guess a Neff hob wont look out of place.

ParticipantYes it is a common problem, but replacing the taps £60-80 thats just the call out !!!
It doesnt need parts though and replacing the taps would be a waste of time, it doesnt even need taking apart but unfortunately I cannot give you any advice over the net 🙁
I used to do these every week.October 14, 2007 at 7:56 am #230475Parp

Hi wsts,
I realise figures I quoted were probably on the low side and that’s why I’ve opted to go for a new unit. I’ve got a Neff T2124N1EU
S/S finish hob for £121 with a 2 year guarantee.October 14, 2007 at 8:25 am #230476gegsy

HI wsts
Nice choice 😀 Make sure your installation certificate arrives approx 3 weeks after Corgi guy fits the hob.
Then put the document with your house stuff, so if and when you sell your property, the next owners know that the appliance has been installed legally and safe 😉Greg
