ParticipantHi
Could anyone list a step by step guide to replacing worn bearings (inner and outer I guess) on a Whirlpool AWM 8123/S washing machine.
Many thanks

Not step by step.
Summary as follows:
Front off, disconnect suspension legs, hoses and wiring (pics/diagrams vital). Tub out, split it in half, then big hammer and drift time.Penguin45.

Got the drum out and split.
What’s the best method of seperating the outer shell and the drum and then the replacing the bearings ?

Pulley off, drive the shaft through the back of the drum. Protect the end of the shaft. Do this by replacing the pulley bolt, or use one of the same thread as a sacrificial anvil. Big copper faced hammer is best tool.
The same big hammer and a suitable drift (steel bar) is then used to drive the old bearings out – work round the bearings edges to drive them out evenly.
Get the housing thoroughly clean. When driving the new bearings in, do not hit the centre of the bearing – drive around the edges only.
Gloves and safety glasses are a good plan……………

Right….got the smaller bearing out. Can’t get the larger one out. It does come out the opposite way to the smaller one. i.e must be removed by applying force from the smaller bearing side.
Tried a big hammer, metal stake, ice, WD40…any other ideas ??

BFI …..Oh yes.
Got Big John at work (fitter, electrician, plumber) to have a go……2 minutes with a big hammer and a chisel…. bearing out.
Cleaned up all the bits, fitted bearings. Unit back together…..job done.
Most difficult bit…..getting the bearings out and putting the rubber skirt/seal thing back on the front of the drum. Which is easy once you find the ‘knack’.
Cost £19.25 for the bearings.
Time taken about 8 hours in total.
For the record.. I removed the top, front and back, removed the belt, pulley, motor and both weight things off the drum and lifted it out the back after pulling all wiring off connectors and pulling all hoses off. The feet unclip off the base and unclip from the springs. Split drum by popping clips off etc etc.
Can anyone tell me how much this may have cost had I gone an expert in ?

Hi,
We have the same machine, a Whirlpool AWM 8123/S that is about 5 years old. It has in the last week started to have a very noisy rumble whilst on the spin cycle. My guess it’s the bearings on the way out, but wondered if anyone can confirm this or could it be something else. I don’t want to buy a bearing kit and replace if it might be something else.
Thanks

Easy way to test, unplug, take the back off, remove belt and spin the drum by hand. If it makes any noise at all then almost certainly the drum bearings have failed.

No one has mentioned examining the condition of the drum shaft and the brass collar that the shaft real runs on.
Bearings don’t fail unless they get wet!
If the shaft is chewed up abort the job and scrap it.
I used to do these on a daily basis when I had Whirlpool work and I wouldn’t attempt a bearing change but always fitted the tub half assy and a new drum thereby avoiding the recall at my own cost to do the job again.
OK for DIY bods but I have to guarantee my work and the price you can get for a bearing change these days doesn’t cover the cost of doing it twice.
BTW job time total 45 mins from ringing doorbell to finishing the tea! 8)

I’ve had the back off, and disconected the belt. The motors drive shaft seems to spin fine but spinning the drum sounds like driving up the motorway with noisy tyres – it rumbles, although doesn’t appear to be any play or drum movement on the back bearing that sits behind the belt pulley wheel.
To get the drum out looks like an all day job to me, not having done it before. Don’t see how you can check if the shaft is chewed up until it’s all dismantled, changing the complete drum and bearing unit sounds like a good but expensive idea, surely must be almost more sensible to buy a new machine.
Any thoughts? 😕
I was thinking of ordering this bearing kit:-

Yup, drum bearings for sure

Yes, time, patience, diagrams and pictures if you’ve never done this before.
Remraf wrote:Don’t see how you can check if the shaft is chewed up until it’s all dismantled,
Nope, you can’t…. If the drum isn’t flopping about all over the place when handled from the front, there is a reasonable chance it’s OK but you can’t be sure until you see it.

Not a cost effective solution………

Any thoughts? 😕You really need to strip it first – it’s the only way. If you decide to go ahead, email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk with the 12nc number (starts 85—–) to be sure of getting the right bearing set.
