ParticipantHi, I’m a newbie here but found this site and thought it would be a good place to start to try and find out why my Bosch Excell 1400 washing machine has just started to exhibit a weird problem.
I noticed a couple of weeks ago the washing was still very wet after the wash cycle had finished. I set the spin cycle again and noticed that it could not achieve maximum spin speed, it would start to spin up and gradually build up speed but before it reached max speed it stopped spinning, turned the drum a couple of times then the program timer dropped to 1min and that was that.
So I called a man in a van and he was flummoxed, the problem would happen with or without washing in the drum. He thought at first that it was a problem with the machine unable to balance the load (it was towels and a towelling dressing gown so quite heavy when wet) but that was disproved when it did the same thing with no washing in the drum. He then thought that changing the brushes may resolve the problem although he wasn’t convinced it was the cause of the problem however after putting new brushes in it would not spin at all. So he decided to put the old brushes back in (they are worn but not to the point they do not work) sprayed a small amount of WD40 on the motor and hey presto it started working again. The man in a van told me that it was possible that a piece of one of the brushes may have come off and was short circuiting and became dislodged when he took the motor out and sprayed the WD40 on it, anyway off went the man in a van and we were left with a working appliance again until that is last weekend when the problem came back.
At this point I should say that the machine is just over 5years old it is used regularly but not every day and how annoying that it is just out of the 5 year extended warranty I took out on it.
Anyway the problem came back so I tried the spin cycle setting and as before it would start to spin up with or without washing in the drum and then give up before reaching top speed and then end the spin cycle.
I called Bosch this time and have a engineer booked for this Thursday but when we did a wash on Sunday (knowing we’d have to use a neighbours machine to spin off the load) it worked fine again and has done for every load (about 3) since then.
I’m now baffled about what it could be (I’m no expert in such things) and I am contemplating cancelling the engineer and saving myself a £65 call out charge.
Any help, ideas, suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks 😕

It does sound to me like the motor brushes are sticking in their holders and only a full strip-down of the motor may be the best way to resolve this problem? Cleaning the motor and the brush holders the objective here. 😉

I appreciate that advice thank you. It does seem like a probable fault diagnosis as the fault went after the man in his van put new brushes in then after it refused to spin at all with new brushes put the old ones back in and it worked so I guess he must have freed up the brush holders enough to get it working again albeit for a short amount of time.
Stripping down the motor is beyond my know how and I would not want to attempt it with no experience or knowledge as I know that a new one is a lot of money so I think I’ll keep my engineer booking and let him check it out for me.
I don;t really want to have to replace it as it’s been excellent and I can’t afford to go out and buy another one so hopefully it’s an easy fix.
Thanks again. 😀

Just wanted to post that the problem has been fixed today by the nice man from Bosch.
For anyone who may have read this thread and wondered what the problem could be it turned out to be the motor.
At first the machine behaved itself the engineer did a diagnostic check and found no error codes stored and he put it into a spin cycle and it behaved itself.
He decided to remove and inspect the motor/bushes etc and put in new brushes, once reassembled he ran a test spin cycle and the machine replicated the fault the motor cut out and it stopped spinning only this time with lots of arking. The engineer diagnosed a faulty motor.
New one installed a lot quieter and working well and not as expensive as I feared at £190 inc of call out labour and parts a lot cheaper than a new high end machine anyway.
Thanks to all who’ve read this and for the response I got also.
