ParticipantKen and I earlier today tried to answer a simple question over the estimated noise level of an ISE machine : –

Now whilst Ken’s reply is possibly closer than my statement, it does bring into question the issue of noise level ratings (or lack of them?) for laundry appliances in general. And, like it or not, some will continue to make an issue of it. :rolls:
Which? gave the ISE 5 a “poor” rating, yet they do not state the maximum level to which it attained?…..Some give dB levels during the wash cycle and others give the max dB level during fast spin, others state BOTH?
To my mind the ISE 5 is extremely quiet in the great scheme of things but yet Which? think otherwise?
How long is a piece of string for Chr***t sake? 😕
Who cares?……A Bee farts at 4dB….and a curry and beer soaked drunk can hit 80dB in one shot….so what?

There’s no simple answer to this Martin and, with your interest in radio, I thought you’d have studied the dB scale and how it was applied. 😉
This is the answer which I wrote as I was getting p1ssed off answering the same old question over and over.
The short explanation is that people look at a dB rating and treating it as a linear form of measurement, which it isn’t, it’s logarithmic and subjective to both the person and the environment. In other words, it’s impossible to accurately rate in a way that people will understand it.

Very true Ken.
By the way, in Ham Radio we use dBm (field strength in millivolts) measurement as apposed to sound levels measured in dBa (sound pressure levels). So when I give a call to my friend in South Carolina unless he tells me my signal is at least 20dBm over S9 I’d be thinking there was something wrong with my radio gear or he hasn’t plugged his rig into his antenna? 😈 😆
But to be serious for a moment, I registered with Which? the other day to read about their own dB levels on various washers and dryers. Darned if they don’t give them as it happens. They just rate each model with their own meaningless 5 Star rating? So that was a waste of time I reckon. 🙁
As I said before, who the hell cares? Todays modern washing machine is quieter than anything made previously, quiet motors, plastic tubs, fuzzy logic OOBalance control…..they never had it so good! So quibling over sound levels is a bl**dy joke at best and only some Internet nerd would even ask the question anyway? :rolls: 😉
