I’m preparing myself for a tirade of abuse…but we have had an integrated Dishwasher for nearly 5 years & have never (as far as I am aware) even opened the salt compartment let alone added salt to the machine.

The dishwasher works perfectly well…so why should we need it?

We are in Scotland where the water is soft…does that make a difference?

It is not essential in very soft water areas. In this area which also has soft water I have customers that have 20 year old dishwashers that have never had salt in them, working as well now as the day they went in.

Does the type of powder you use make a difference? Modern powders with glasscare, rinse-aid, water softeners etc etc will surely need less, or no, rinse-aid or salt added? Or doesn’t it work like that?

Does anyone know the water hardness for Whitley in North Yorkshire, i’ve put my postcode in the thing for Yorkshire Water and it says I’m in a hard water area, but I dont’t believe them, as we don’t have much limescale in our kettle or taps or on the washer element when we took it out?
