ParticipantCan anyone help? I have a 10 year old Amana side by side fridge freezer,
model no: SRD520TW which is in very good condition. Earlier in the year the ice maker packed up and I spent loads of money having it repaired. In the past two weeks the freezer has developed an intermittent fault: three times it has stopped pumping cold air to the top of the machine so all the food defrosts from the top first and the fridge gets very warm as no cold air is being pumped through the small vent that goes from the freezer to the fridge. I really don’t know whether to get a repair man out which will cost £100 for call out and labour with parts on top, or to abandon the machine which seems a pity and not very environmentally friendly. The problem when it happens continues for a number of hours, then the fan noise starts again and off it goes working aparantly fine. I don’t want to leave it and hope for the best as it gets expensive throwing food away!I would appreciate your views, replace or repair.
Many thanks
Clancy
I can’t afford another Amana and am considering a similar Siemens, what do you suggest?

Thanks to reading this forum we have fixed the problem. Inside the back of the freezer behind the panel was completely frozen up. This was probably due to the fridge door not being shut properly when we went away recently (teenage children left at home!) We switched the freezer off, left the doors open and took the back inside panel off to speed up the defrost process. All is well and we’ve saved a call out of nearly £100 or a replacment of £1700. Thank you to all who contribute to this site, you saved us some serious expense! 😀

hello, i don’t want to rain on your parade, but it’s highly likely that the fault will re-appear.
it’s just possible that the fault was caused by the door being left open, allowing ice to build up and therefore restrict the air flow around the cabinet.
manually defrosting it will have got rid of the ice and the appliance will work again.
if this is the case, then happy days!
however, with the intermittent nature of the fault, it’s probably the defrost thermostat that’s at fault, causing the fan not to run.
this is not an expensive repair and at ten years old, you should be expecting a lot more life out of your quality appliance, so i would say that the repair would be the better option.cheers.
