ParticipantIve been told that a bearing job on this machine requires a complete drum change at a cost that will right off this 18 month old machine. Is this correct?

Not really as it does have a 5 year manufacturers warranty and you should point that out to your customer in all fairness. 😉

As someone who always trys to help the customer out, i did explain that it was covered with a Hotpoint 5 year parts warranty and although the £90 charge was a lot higher than my rate, in this instance, (if she forgets about the fact that the m/c is only 18 months old), she was getting quite a good deal.

You can get the bearings and seal, there are two sizes 35mm and 30mm, you won’t know which you need until you dismantal the machine, the old bearings are a bit tricky to get out and need some hammering. depending on what condition the spider shaft is in, I usually manage to clean it up, you may need a new drum spider. I’ve nether managed to get one off the drum though. I wonder if any engineers have managed to get those screws undone and how.

If it is only 18 months old there is a strong possibility the machine has a welded drum so no bearing repair. The screwed drum has the 35 mm bearings on this machine. To remove the spider from the drum I use a titanium drill to remove the screw heads, a simple task.

If the screws are are not rusted solid, as i would suspect in an 18 month old machine, if you give them a couple of good whacks on the the heads with a drift or some thing similar they usualy come out no prob’s, i only bring the drill out when they are knackered. cheers jj

Give the screws a good dose of wd40 or similar, take a drift and give the heads a good smack with the aid of a big hammer.Get a shatterproof t40 bit and with the bit inserted in the screw give them another smart tap.
Works everytime. -
