ParticipantHi
This washing machine is around 4 years old and came with the house when we moved in a year ago. All fine until recently – now the clothes are coming out with extensive white marks/residue that has a “greasy” feel to it and looks like powder remnants. Most noticable on dark clothes.
No flashing lights are appearing in the programme progress indicator or error codes in the time display.
Any suggestions gratefully received!
many thanks

Machine could be up to ten years old……
Observation required – is the machine tumbling in the wash and spinning at the end? If you set it to the rinse programmes, are you getting cold water coming through? Does it drain fully in 30-40 seconds?
Drive motor is of the carbon brush variety. The brushes will wear out eventually and the motor will stop. This will leave soapy deposits. No cold water for the rinses will obviously leave soap on the clothes, as will poor drainage – check the filter.
If none of the above applies, try performing a service wash to clean the machine itself. Select the 90/95c programme, add a quality Bio whites powder (The green Ariel is good) and let the machine do its thing. You should do this periodically as a matter of course.
Check these points out and report back.

Very impressed with speed of response and helpful comments- many thanks!
If the production date (FD) number is 8303401029, does that mean it was made in 2003?
Anyway, back to observations….
Machine is tumbling and spinning at the end. Cold water coming through on the rinse programme and drains fully in about half a minute. Checked the pump – no clinker in there and it turns freely. And my good lady did a “service wash” (as you described)very recently…
And the last wash seemed to be fine!
So could this be an intermittent fault with the carbon brushes becoming worn, and the motor sometimes working and sometimes not?
Thanks again.

ParticipantAre you using the reccommended amount of detergent in the wash ? Underdosing with detergent can cause a grey scummy residue to be left on the clothes .
The service wash is worth doing once a month as well .January 7, 2008 at 9:03 am #238759Hen123

No change in the amount of detergent – or brand for that matter – so I’m inclined to think the problem lies elsewhere.
Thanks
