Would you drink water that was extracted from the sweat of other people’s clothes? Not a tempting idea for mny but over 1000 people in Gothenburg, Sweden have done just that.
The clothing in the dryer gets spin and heated turning the moisture into vapour that then passes through a very fine filter, which is made from says, Er. Andreas Hammer the maker of this contraption, a material that is a bit like Goretex that lets through only the steam, leaving behind bacteria, clothing fibres and so forth.
The technique used to separate water from salt is called ‘membrane distillation’.

Okay, so it might seem a little crazy and a tad eleborate to install into your kitchen even if, for some strange reason that you did have the urge to drink your own sweat but, that’s not the point. The project was designed as a part of campaign by Unicef in Sweden to highlight the fact that 780 million people in the world do not have access to clean water.
If you look very closely at the photogragh though many of us will recognise the tumble dryer being used. It’s an Asko T25 or another of the current generation of tumble dryers from Asko and sold here by ISE so a good choice there.
